A few notes on Jupiter in Sagittarius

Jupiter

The planet Jupiter enters the sign Sagittarius on November 23, 2006, where he will stay until he enters Capricorn on December 18, 2007. Jupiter’s last journey through Sagittarius was December 1994 – January 1996. Before that, December 1982 – January 1984, January 1971 – February 1972, February 1959 – March 1960. If you can find a common thread of similar events, you may be able to anticipate the kinds of energies you will be dealing with this time around. Of course, there are many other things that are different now than in these other times.

Jupiter indicates where in your life growth is taking place. Jupiter is larger than life, optimistic, loves adventure and risk. He can be an accomplished gambler, weighing risk against reward, or a foolish spendthrift who presses his luck and loses it all at the track. Jupiter shows an urge to grow, adventure and expand your horizons.

When Jupiter enters Sagittarius, his home sign, he is even more so. A planet in its own sign expresses its pure energy. Jupiter is a wanderer, and in Sag, he is in the sign of wandering, adventure, and learning. If your motivations are superficial or not grounded in a strong sense of self, you may feel like a balloon with no one holding the string, perpetually traveling from place to place.

If we think of Jupiter as growth, then we can predict that those areas of industry associated with Jupiter/Sagittarius are due for a growth spurt. Those industries are travel, gambling, teaching, publishing, loans, appraisals. People ruled by Sag are aristocrats, celebrities, attorneys, judges, juries, brokers, clergy, professors, promoters, Senators, jockeys. Places are churches, colleges, stables, race tracks.

Zeus statue at Olympia

I have seen several testimonies from people having Jupiter transits, that they expected the planet of good luck and abundance to treat them better. Instead of goodies raining down from above, they found they had no luck in love, or they got fired from a job. Okay, not the “good luck and abundance” promised in the astrology books. But on closer inspection, it turned out the guy was looking for the wrong kind of girl and had some personal growing to do. The other guy wasn’t all that thrilled about his job anyway. And guess what— eventually he became a professional poker player! See, Jupiter is a traveler, he calls you to explore. This is unsettling for people who don’t like change. Since when does good luck equal same-old same-old? If you’re really lucky, he won’t let you sit on your butt and settle into a mediocre situation. Jupiter wants greatness for you.

“The desire to carry through reforms in accordance with religion or outlook on life, fanaticism, far reaching aims. A love of adventure. A tenacious clinging to strange ideas, restlessness, the fight against traditional or conventional norms.”
—Reinhold Ebertin, Combination of Stellar Influences

“[Jupiter in Sagittarius] seeks to grow and improve oneself through aspiration toward a far-off goal and following one’s innate faith in life.”
—Stephen Arroyo, Chart Interpretation Handbook

Jupiter is known as the “higher octave” of Mercury. If Mercury governs your mind and thoughts, Jupiter represents your “higher mind,” your world view and beliefs, the “larger perspective” through which you view everything and everyone in your life. Hopefully there’s room for other opinions in your world view. You’ll get a lot more out of this time if you don’t presume you know everything already, and a lot less if you do. Jupiter likes to be “right” and can be rather dogmatic and annoying in that pursuit, sometimes even bending the facts to fit their world view, rather than letting the facts shape it. So it’s unlikely the political pundits are going to stop their craziness anytime soon.

Jupiter’s downsize is excess. So we may see an explosion in diseases and problems related to excess, such as pollution, obesity, diabetes, liver disease, bankruptcy, etc.

Herbs of Jupiter are Dandelion, Hyssop, Meadowsweet, Melissa (lemon balm), Red clover, Sage, Burdock. These herbs nourish and enrich the blood and liver. (Apply wisdom and common sense when using herbal medicines. If you don’t know what you’re doing, consult an experienced herbalist before using them.)

Zeus and Ganymede

The mythological Jupiter’s Greek name is Zeus. His father is Cronus (Saturn), and his mother is Rhea. His grandmother is Gaia. Even though he is married to Hera (Juno), he has many sons and daughters by different mortals and goddesses, including Ares (Mars) and Venus. He also has a famous young male lover named Ganymede.

  1. I don’t know a lot about my Birth Chart but my Birthday is November 23rd 1979. Sounds like there’s some intense lessons ahead …
Thank you so much for all your work!! It’s greatly appreciated.

  2. Jupitar wiil be in my 3rd house of communication.
Reflecting on the dates that Ms. Molly mentioned
brings me back to all of the major moves I made in my life.
Interestingly enough, I am in the planning stages of doing exactly that at the time mentioned for Nov. ’06
Whether planned or not , it always seems to ring true.
Blessings Molly for all of your insights.

  3. Hi Molly,

When Jupiter enters Sagitarrius, are we to look in the house where Jupiter is currently transiting? Is that where we will experience this the most?

Or do we look to where our natal Jupiter is?

Thank you, sorry if this is a stupid question.

    Love,
    Riley

    — Riley    2 November 2006    #
  4. Hi Riley— The house Jupiter is transiting tells you where the “action” is. Your natal Jupiter tells you how the Jupiter energy works in your life, so it is worth looking at too.

According to Bernadette Brady in her book Predictive Astrology: the Eagle and the Lark, the house with the natal planet indicates the cause of the event, the house the planet is transiting is the “playing field” or where the action occurs, and the house it rules indicates where the results of the event show up. In my experience, sometimes it’s that cut-and-dried, sometimes not. But those guidelines give you a good start. The book is fantastic, I hope you’ll read it.

  5. Dear Molly,

Does the transit of Jupiter into Saggitarius effect one’s progressed chart? In my natal chart (4-14-54, 12:53 AM, Providence, RI), Jupiter is at 22 degrees Gemini in the 5th house, now transitting my 11th house, and opposing itself. In my progressed chart, Jupiter is in my 4th house in Cancer, in a stellium with Mercury and Venus, the three forming an opposition (and a yod?) to Mars in my 10th house in Capricorn. What does this mean? Also, about 7 months ago my progressed chart showed all four angles at 29 degrees, recently all have progressed to 0 degrees in cardinal houses. Does this signify something special, such as rebirth? Is it unusual?

Thanks so much, I’d really appreciate a reply by email even if this isn’t interesting enough for the website, thank you.

    Abby

    — Abby Martin    5 November 2006    #
  6. Hi Abby— I do not read transits to progressed charts, only natal. Angles at 29 degrees are about to change to a new sign. To me this symbolizes finishing up old business and preparing for a new chapter in life.

    — Molly    6 November 2006    #
  7. Hi Molly,
Love your predictions, i will have jupiter transiting my 4th and 5th house opposing my natal jupiter of 22degrees in the 11th, what does jupiter do when transiting and opposing himself?

    — Monique Louise Hill    7 November 2006    #
  8. Jupiter meeting himself expands your life, your philosophy, your beliefs and your worldview, and stimulates a desire for freedom and adventure. With the squares and oppositions in particular, this can be overwhelming and you may tend toward responses that are excessive or out of proportion to the issue at hand. It’s not a bad thing, you just have to be mindful and keep things in perspective. Good luck!

  9. I was born 28th November 1958 in Baguio City, Philippines. Currently living in Belgium for the last 16 years. My life has gone through a shuffle since 1990. Lately, (last month) I come across to reading astrology and reading more about it scares the hope out of me though I feel positive about it.

    All the best

    Orly

    — orly    10 November 2006    #
  10. Hi Orly— I don’t understand how something can simultaneously scare the hope out of you and have you feeling positive. But I can tell you that many people get spooked when they first start learning about their birth charts. When I first started reading mine, I thought I must be the world’s most screwed up person!

But I got into classes with a professional astrologer who taught me how to put the information I was getting into a perspective that was much more helpful. I hope you’ll get a professional to help you understand your chart, and use it to put your past and future into a new perspective.

    — Molly    12 November 2006    #
  11. Molly, what house will Jupiter be in when it enters sag?

Also, where can I find this sort of info in the future? I used to have a free program called Astrolog, any recommendations? I use a mac now, so I don’t know if it will still work. I haven’t checked yet. I use the astro.com free services but haven’t found a tool for this purpose.

    Thanks for everything

    — michael    15 November 2006    #
  12. Hi Michael—

I think once upon a time Astrolog was available for Mac, but I don’t know if there’s an OSX version. A Google search should reveal that info.

There’s a nice program called Kairon available. It’s not free, but the cost is very reasonable ($35 for a basic license), and it has some very good features. You can download a tryout version on the website. I don’t have the URL handy, but you can find it on Google.

Jupiter’s house depends on the time of day. The houses show where a planet is in relation to earth. Is it above, below the horizon, east, or west? This changes during the day, so you can’t say that Jupiter is in a house by itself. Now, it is in a house in your birthchart. Look for the house that contains the last degrees of Scorpio and first degrees of Sag. That’s where the growth energy is now.

  13. Molly,

Thank you for a wonderfully informative article on Jupiter in Sag. I am a libra sun in the second house with Jupiter in Virgo in the first house and a north node in Leo in the 12th house. (10-6-80 4:49 AM, Richmond, VA) What possible trends should I look for with this transit? With Leo in Saturn, the meaning of my life path has been under heavy stress.

Thanks for any advice and information.

  14. Hello Molly- I really enjoy reading your insightful articles and predictions. I am a natal Jupiter- (4-24-71, 6:04 am EST Flint, MI) in Sag 4 degrees in my 7th house and was wondering how this jupiter return might influence those who have this placing. I am a Taurus Rising 11 degrees, Taurus Sun 4 degrees. As you mentioned, Jupiter is all about expansion- wandering, exploring and growth. I have been feeling the need to pick up the pace in my search for a new career field. The last few years have not been very clear for me and I felt very unsure of which path to take. I returned to college recently to work on finishing my Bachelor’s degree. The last month has been very exciting and busy and I am finding lots of energy in choosing my career path. Thanks again for providing such an informative and truthful website!

  15. Hi Molly,
What a great site; I’ve enjoyed reading your articles very much as well as your comments and feedback from others.

I’m very curious about Jupiter’s move into Sagg. Jupiter’s transit through my sign brought change but mostly on a emotional level and I wondering if I will see the effects of this more outwardly as Jupiter moves through Sagg. I’m a Scorpio Sun (born November 13, 1966, 10:51pm). The moon is in Sagg in my 5th house at 11°53’ and Jupiter is in Leo in my 12th house at 4°23’ in my natal chart. I would appreciate any insight into what this might bode for me this year. I am in the midst of making a career change, worried about financial security and may be purchasing a new home/working from home….
    Best wishes!

  16. Hello Molly- I just wanted to add 1 more thing about the transit. Jupiter will have an exact conjunction to iteself in my birth chart in a few weeks around the middle of December. Jupiter was 4 degrees 55’ Sag retrograde at the time of my birth. As this window of time passes, are there any particular engergies I might need to be aware of?

    Jennifer

    p.s. Your site is awesome!

  17. In my natal chart my 7th house is in 19 degrees Scorpio. I believe Jupiter’s been transiting my 7th house for the last couple months. Is this correct? And what does this mean for me?

  18. Hi Molly,

Thank you for your site & newsletter!

I am an adult college student / single mom with natal direct Jupiter Leo 6°48’07 in house 10; and north node in – you guessed it – True Node Sagittarius 26°12’58 in house 3.

Any suggestions? Is this a time to write memoirs, or simply work towards published research? Or something I’m missing here – lol… (FAR from an astrologer)

    Thank you!

  19. Moly,

Last night I did my homework last night about this Jupiter transit. At first, I didn’t think it effected me but on closer inspection, it did.

1960-I took my first (and only trip) to Scotland with my grandmother and mother.

1971-Was in junior college, took a trip to New York.

1982-Went back to college, took my first cruise to Mexico.

1995-Was working on my first novel, took trips to WDW and my first trip to Las Vegas.

Looking at my chart, my Sun, Moon, Mercury, and
Pluto are in Leo. My Saturn and Neptune are in Libra.

What is most interesting to me is right now, I am promoting my screenplay and starting my own publishing business. With Saturn in Leo, and hitting all my planets in Leo (not to mention, squaring both my natal Mars in Scorpio and Jupiter In Taurus). This has been a challenging period in my life. I really have to put my nose to the grindstone. And at this point, funds are a concern.

But the most important thing is that I am not giving
    up!

    Take Care,

    Helen

  21. I just discovered that I’m having a Jupiter return tomorrow with the new moon at 28.32 Sagittarius – my birth chart has Jupiter in Sagittarius at 28.29. I’m sure this has some significance. 12 years ago I was in college deciding if I should do a four year degree at 46. I’d just been divorced about a year. I was definitely growing and expanding. My whole life changed. It was traumatic and exciting at the same time, but I don’t know if I could do that again. On the other hand, I just began dating in October – 13 years to the week from the date my ex and I separated. Does any of this make sense?

  22. Hi Molly,

My sun is in leo (actually I’m on the cusp leo-virgo…I was born Aug. 21, 1980 at 3:31pm in Michigan), my moon is in capricorn, and my ascending sign is sagittarius. Jupitor is in Virgo. I’m curious as to the kind of affects jupitor coming into sagittarius will have on me this coming year. I’ve just gotten out of a very abusive relationship with a scorpio (oh my goodness) and am really feeling the healing benefits of letting go of the hurt and humiliation of letting myself be treated so badly. The leo/giver in me was constantly trying to please a very unhappy and insecure scorpio who was incredibly abusive to maintain power and control. Regardless of that, I’m on the up and up and beginning to move on. I’m 26 years old and a girlfriend of mine warned me about “Saturn Returns” in my chart. She said this is usually a terrible time in a person’s life. To be honest, I feel like I just went through a horrible horrible time in my life…does satrun returning always have a terrible affect on people and what affect will jupiter coming into sag. have on me?

Thanks so much! This is a really interesting web site.

  25. Hi Molly,

I was doing some reading and found out that Jupiter is in detriment in the sign of Virgo. My Jupiter is in Virgo, but it’s also my 2nd house, which is the House of possessions. In your opinion, which has a stronger influence, Jupiter in it’s sign of detriment or Jupiter in the second House?

  26. I just got down to the bottom of a list of questions I haven’t answered, and I’m sorry, everyone. I get busy sometimes and don’t feel like I have the time to answer.

If you’re still out there, send me an e-mail, remind me of your question, and I’ll do my best to answer it before Jupiter enters Capricorn. :)

  27. Your article sheds some light on why Jupiter in Sag isn’t always tons of abundance and fun!!

I’m a first house Sag Sun with Sag Rising, and natal Jupiter in Cancer in the 8th house.

Three major women in my life have passed away (Jan.14-Feb.16, 2007). Hospitalization and illness began early and mid-December 2006 with two of them.

I also had some mega-financial snafus happen late Jan. 2007 through the entire month of Feburary and early March 2007. Bwah!!! Of course, I had some wonderful transformations, awakenings, and love during it all, but – enough already!

Hopefully, all this 8th house death is over for now, and Jupiter’s abundance and life are on the way! :-)

    Thanks for the article!

  29. Hi Molly- I do understand how busy things get. People tell me that I always have a few balls up in the air at once.

I believe that time has answered my question from earlier #14 & 16 regarding the Jupiter in Saggitarius transit. About a month or so after I wrote the questions, I got hired to work in my chosen field. I have found my career calling in broadcast engineering and it is the most fulfilling job I have ever had. Molly, your articles are the best!! Keep on passing along your great insight.

    Jennifer

  30. Jennifer, thanks for checking in to let us know how it’s going. Major kudos and congrats on the new job.

I’m sorry for being so slow. Neptune is square my Venus (ruler of my Libra Asc.), and I have been really out of it lately!

    — Molly    19 July 2007    #
  31. I’m curious, when Jupiter moves into Capricorn, being Jupiter’s father is Cronus (Saturn, who rules Capricorn) what can we expect, a depression? A state of the heavy hand on the jovial Jupiter mentality and belief systems? Getting down to nitty gritty?

Capricorn is my 7th house, North Node and Saturn is enclosed in my 5th (scorpio). Sounds like a creative time maybe for me, rolling up my sleeves a bit. —My Venus is also in Cap. border of 7/8 houses sextile Saturn.

What about partnerships? Will I have more than I can handle? Or will I be forced to make a very solid choice?

And what about the general cosmic soup?

    — cammy    5 September 2007    #
  32. Hi Cammy— I’ll post my thoughts on Jupiter in Capricorn soon. But remember it’s still Jupiter. It brings “lots of” to the planets and houses it transits. And Capricorn does bring a serious vibe in, expansion within boundaries, calculated risks. Benefits for those who have paid their dues. Your ideas are good.

    — Molly    9 September 2007    #
  33. Hi Molly,
What a blessing from your site, I have been kind of unlucky in my career I mean my profession whereever I went I worked about 1year to 1 year and an half I am very hard working I have bright ideas I turn an office from a dungen to a decent office making everything systematic etc but I happen to have a tiff with my office colleague and in the bargain lost my job I don’t know how it happens but it happens all the time will my luck change this coming year. Born 5th December 1953 Most of the time I feel I am a loser and slowly am loosing all my friends

    — jULIE fLAVIA    14 November 2007    #
  34. Hi Julie— I’m a believer that we create our own luck. If you look back and see a string of failures, then you have to realize that the common factor in all these experiences is you. It sounds to me like you’re doing something that makes others not want to work with you. Sounds like these tiffs with co-workers are more serious than you think. So that’s where you have to start. Some kind of honest and systematic self-examination, maybe therapy. And maybe a different kind of job, one that is more suited to your talents?

It’s not as easy as crying out and hoping your “luck” will change, but you’re more likely to be successful using my approach.

    — Molly    15 November 2007    #
  35. Hello Molly,

I haven’t had a chance to read your column for awhile and it’s good to be back.

I hadn’t been thinking of the dates of the Jupiter in Sagittarius transits; looking at the dates and the similar type and quality of occurrences at those times is quite amazing.

For every time period there are big changes in direction at the end of the transit when Jupiter trines my ascendent in Leo and Venus in Aries as it enters my 5th house (among other aspects). Even when I was 7, and now I am 54. Usually with relationships, to having my first and only child in Dec. 1996.

Thank-you for writing this and provoking the insight.

  36. Molly, can you explain this quote a little more?

“Jupiter’s downsize is excess. So we may see an explosion in diseases and problems related to excess, such as pollution, obesity, diabetes, liver disease, bankruptcy, etc.”

  38. Hi,

I’m wondering what you have to say about myself having my north node at 29 degrees Sag. (just passed my midheaven in the 9th w/neptune) with pluto and recently jupiter crossing it…. I also have venus and lilith in Capricorn in the 10 house where Jupiter has now entered opposing Saturn in my 4th, where Mars has been for a while. I also have a bunch of asteroids in Sag. and Cap.
