Jupiter in Aquarius: January 2009 - January 2010
The planet
Jupiter enters the sign
Aquarius on January 5, 2009, where he will stay until he enters Pisces in January 2010. Jupiter’s last journey through Aquarius was January 1997 – February 1998. Before that, February 1985 – February 1986, February 1973 – March 1974, March 1961 – March 1962. If you can find a common thread of similar events, you may be able to anticipate the kinds of energies you will be dealing with this time around. Of course, there are many other planets in the sky, many other factors to consider that are different now than in these other times.
Jupiter indicates where in your life growth is taking place. Jupiter is larger than life, optimistic, loves adventure and risk. He can be an accomplished gambler, weighing risk against reward, or a foolish spendthrift who presses his luck and loses it all at the track. Jupiter shows an urge to grow, adventure and expand your horizons. Sagittarius and Pisces natives are likely to respond very strongly, and likely very positively, to Jupiter’s movement into this new sign.

When Jupiter enters Aquarius, he is also coming out of Capricorn, a sign where his larger than life energy has to work within strict boundaries and rules. Now that we have firmly planted our moorings, we can use the traditions of the past as a springboard to jump forward into the future. Aquarius is a sign of freedom, reform, and innovation. Visionary and forward looking. This represents a spirit of reform that is hopeful and sociable, instilling a sense of social justice and fellowship. It benefits groups and communities, especially those with a humanitarian bent. It is a perfect planetary backdrop for our new forward-thinking, Aquarius rising President to take office.
Aquarius has two planetary rulers— Uranus, the planet of truth, rebellion, and reform; and Saturn, planet of traditions, rules, and boundaries. Aquarian natives have many ways of reconciling these opposites— from the conservative businessman who wears flamboyant ties to the punk rocker who collects antiques. Jupiter in Aquarius offers us all a chance to honor this ideal of moving into the future while remembering our roots.
Not only is Jupiter entering this new, innovative, more expansive sign, it is also moving into mutual reception with
Uranus. Mutual reception means they are in each other’s signs. Jupiter is in Aquarius, ruled by Uranus, and Uranus is in Pisces, ruled by Jupiter. This gives both planets extra juice, extra synergy with each other that beefs up their power and positive energy.
If we think of Jupiter as growth, then we can predict that those areas of industry associated with Aquarius are due for a growth spurt. Those industries are technology, aeronautics, astrology, automobile manufacturers, energy (especially alternative energy), broadcasting, science and scientific research.

I have seen several testimonies from people having Jupiter transits, that they expected the planet of good luck and abundance to treat them better. Instead of goodies raining down from above, they found they had no luck in love, or they got fired from a job. Okay, not the “good luck and abundance” promised in the astrology books. But on closer inspection, it turned out the guy was looking for the wrong kind of girl and had some personal growing to do. The other guy wasn’t all that thrilled about his job anyway. And guess what— eventually he became a professional poker player! See, Jupiter is a traveler, he calls you to explore by freeing you up from old limitations. This is unsettling for people who don’t like change. Since when does good luck equal same-old same-old? If you’re really lucky, he won’t let you sit on your butt and settle into a mediocre situation. Jupiter wants you to expand your comfort zone and embrace the unfamiliar.
“Humanitarianism, hopefulness or the joy of hope, wealth of plans, sociability, comradeship or good fellowship, the knowledge of human nature, a sense of social justice.”
—Reinhold Ebertin, Combination of Stellar Influences
“[Jupiter in Aquarius] seeks to grow and improve oneself through humanitarian ideals, intellectual development, and daring experimentation.”
—Stephen Arroyo, Chart Interpretation Handbook

Hi Molly,
Thanks for filling us in on Jupiter in Aquarius. I could definitely use some positive expansion in all areas of my life! Jupiter has been in my 7th house and alas, I did not find true love in 2008. However, it is entering my 8th house I’m told, which could be good for romance? You mentioned that Sag and Pisces natives would likely benefit from Jupiter’s new placement. I’m curious if that would be true for one who has her sun, mercury and venus (all in Gemini) in the 12th house of Pisces? I’ve been told that with all of those planets in the 12th house, I have much Piscean energy.
Thanks so much for your good work,
Betsy

Hi, Molly!
Like Betsy, I could also use a “helping hand up” at the moment. 2008 was such a dire year for me (especially the last five months), I came out the end of it so deflated and despondent.
Your article mentions that the last time Jupiter passed through Aquarius was in 1997. I have many great memories of that year, and I have always considered it the greatest year that I have lived. There was just something about that year that was so happy and positive – and I could FEEL it right from the start of the year all the way through.
Hopefully Jupiter will be kind to me again and give me the much-needed positive outlook and good fortune that made 1997 so special.
Martin.

Oh dear… I really hope this year’s Jupiter in Aquarius works better for me than all previous ones back to 1973. My leitmotif seems to be wrenching personal change at great personal cost. In 1973 we moved, I had to leave all my little friends behind, and the new elementary school teacher bullied me. 1985 – transition from secondary school to adult life, unable to decide on a course of study, great problems in first job, months of depression, nervous breakdown. 1997 – completion of PhD, wrenching career change, huge changes in personal life, second nervous breakdown.
I can only hope that as I am now in the fifth decade of my life and have worked through a lot of the issues that came up previously, that this Jupiter in Aquarius works out better for a change. I am Aquarius rising and earn my living in the wider field of human rights/non-discrimination, which should be supported by this constellation.

Does having a planet natally in a sign the same as the current transit effect the intensity for a person?
Using Barack Obama as an example (and yes, me too), who has Jupiter in Aquarius.
I’m quite curious about this.

Hi Molly,
During the 1997/1998 transit i found “freedom” in many different ways – Graduated high school, moved away to college, family secrets revealed and found a friendship that freed me from a less than fulfilling relationship. These were all very positive even if they didn’t seem so at the time.
What will be much different this time around is I’m hitting my saturn return – with a sag sun, gemini ascendant, aquarius midheaven both of these transits are powerful in my chart. I’m interested to see how the dynamics of these two transits play out together.
With Saturn in virgo, my work over the last year has been to let go of my “virgo” tendencies towards perfectionism that cause major anxiety. I have made progress, but it seems like like this jupiter in aquarius transit may be the right backdrop to gain that freedom :)

Hi Molly,
I was actually glad to read the last paragraph where you talked about people expecting better luck and Jupiter freeing you up from old limitations because it gives me something to look forward to since my life went into the toilet… literally. On January 5, I dropped my iphone into the toilet. Ironic that Jupiter moved into Aquarius and my iphone moved into the toilet bowl. Sadly, I could not resuscitate it … and now I am wondering if I should be looking to blame the whole grizzley incident on the beginnings of the Mercury retrograde? Any comments?

I was born in February 4 1969, I am Aquarius with ascendent Virgo, and I recall 1997 as being a decisive year in my life after a rough patch. I had a great job in the government, my first serious relationship, a great expansion in money, I grew in many respects, learnt how to drive and bought my first car.
I have been through another rough patch over the past two years. I am thrilled to know Jupiter enteres my sign again and I look forward to great experiences ahead.I assume Jupiter in Aquarius influences all the signs What happens when Jupiter enters directly into the sign you were born?

Hi Molly,
I’m a little skeptical about Jupiter in Aquarius, as well as all the other activities taking place in Aquarius. I’m a Leo (Pisces Desc/7th house)and all of the general horoscopes have said that I am to find true love this year or something along those lines (I’m single, btw.). However, I also have Saturn in Libra and will begin my Saturn return soon. I’m sure you know what Saturn in Libra entails, as well as the different ways of how its lessons could manifest in my life. I’m worried that I will find “true love” and have it be ruined by my upcoming SR. Any advise or suggestions?

I too hope that this Jupiter transit through Aquarius is as beneficial as the last transit. My natal Jupiter is in Aquarius (in the 12th in a grand trine to my Sun in Gemini in the 4th and Moon in Libra in the 8th) so this is a true “Juptier return” for me. Last time it went through in ’97 I got accepted into grad school and found and purchased our first wonderful house, and soon after got preganant with our first child.
This time around I definitely need some new breakthroughs – I am stuck in a stifling, draining, and frustrating workplace and want to move to another posiiton in another city where I can be closer to family support. I have “confidentially” applied to several positions that opened up but am still waiting to hear anything. In fact I am pretty sure I did not make the short list for 4 of the 6 positions I applied for and the other two are just starting to review their applications. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Jupiter does its magic again this time and that I will get some good news soon as my field has a once a year job market. Wish me luck!

Hi. I was born on July 29, 1985. Jupiter is in my seventh house in aquarius. I don’t know what benefits bring those characteristics to my life? I feel I want to marry but all the people that could be my partner are too afraid of doing it. Does that mean that I should be a friend before taking that step? That’s what an astrologer told me. What do you think?
12 · Molly · 5 February 2009
Hi Mike— yes, I think you need to slow down and let things happen in their own time. It’s your natural tendency to go fast, with your Sun conjunct Mars, but with your Moon in Capricorn, you’ll feel much more comfortable and secure with something that starts slowly and builds over time. Jupiter in your 7th bestows ample opportunity to enjoy and benefit from other people in your life. And Jupiter in Aquarius this year is likely to free you from the kind of relationships that don’t work for you, and bring in the kind that do.

I’m not sure I understand the jupiter in aquarius transit. I am scorpio and I have Jupiter in Sagitarrius in my 2nd house. I have aquarius in my 5th house. So does that mean only persons with jupiter in aquarius are affected? Can you share some insight into how this transit works. thanks

Not only people with Jupiter in Aquarius are affected! Society at large is influenced!
If we think of Jupiter as growth, then we can predict that those areas of industry associated with Aquarius are due for a growth spurt. Those industries are technology, aeronautics, astrology, automobile manufacturers, energy (especially alternative energy), broadcasting, science and scientific research.

I think that last paragraph applies to me. I’m an Aquarius Sun/Leo Rising . . . so Aquarius rules my 7th. I have the Sun and Jupiter native in the 7th (and Mercury in very early Pisces there too). Jupiter has crossed over my DSC, Sun, and is on my natal Jupiter at the moment. And nada, nothing, zip. It’s odd.
When it was in my 5th, I dated a lot, had lots of fun, did a lot of writing. But all I feel with this 7th house transit is how lonely I feel and this worry my heart is just going to cease to work as I become more and more cynical (and independent, I won’t discount that!). My life is okay. I have all I need. But no serious relationship and my creative career is sort of at a standstill.
Let’s see, this 7th house transit has another 7-8 months to go. We’ll see what happens.

The ruler of my 7th is Uranus and ruler of my 5th is Jupiter. Jupiter is presently in Aquarius and will conj my 7th house cusp middle of June 2009?

i just read from a reg. astrologer that gives me my wkly reading that its going retrograde on the 15th of june in CAPRICORN?? i thought it was in Aquarius? i know retrograde means the planet appears to be going backwards, which wld mean it slips back into the previous sign it was in? which is CAP right? some answers wld be appreciated! and thanks! a GEM born June 12, 1968

Diana, that author may have been a vedic astrologer. They use a different Zodiac. In western Astrology, Jupiter is finished with Capricorn until next time around— about 11 years from now.
