Mars Retrograde (December 2009 - March 2010)

What does it mean when a planet is in retrograde?
From the earth, if we look up in the sky and watch the motion of the planets against the backdrop of the stars, we usually observe them moving in one direction. Occasionally, every celestial body except the Sun and the Moon will appear to slow down in its orbit, stop, and then go backwards, or retrograde, for a period of time.
Mars Retrograde happens every other year and lasts for approximately 70 to 80 days.
Planets in retrograde lose steam, clarity and direction. So with Mars turning retrograde, we feel like we are paddling upstream.
Mars is the planet of war, fighting, new beginnings, and the act of sex.
How does Mars retrograde affect us?
- New projects and plans initiated now are likely to stall or not develop as expected.
- Our energy level will be lower.
- Accidents and arguments from impulsive actions and unrecognized anger will flare.
- Health problems from stress that’s internalized are also much more likely during this time.
Think of capping a volcano and sending the energy back into the Earth— that’s what happens to each of us during this part of Mars’ cycle. That’s why some folks will explode with frustration and make very poor decisions and moves now, responding with violence and anger instead of patience and dialogue.
Things don’t go as fast as we want them to during Mars retrograde. The better use of this time is to wait, plan and accept compromises. Delays and detours may turn out to be valuable, as you discover something of worth along the way. This is an excellent time to go back over recent developments in your life with the aim of reviewing your goals and methods— significant adjustments made now can improve your chances in the future. This is the time to germinate seeds, and to work out the details and actions of something that will begin (be planted) after the retrograde period ends. Mars represents strength— and this is time to gather your strength, and reinforce your position, rather than burn up your reserves.
Anything new that is postponed during Mars retrograde is probably for the better. Everyone will have less energy to work with during this period of time; remember that when you demand service or conditions to change immediately.
Slow down and resist gambling on first time relationships and situations as the odds are poor that you will succeed or be satisfied from such in the long run. Aries and Scorpio birthsigns, ruled by Mars, especially. Keep your guns holstered and wait for Mars to resume direct motion. Times will change.
Bottom Line
Most of the conflicts and challenges that appear during Mars retrograde will be temporary— that’s why you need to keep focused on the big picture and the philosophy of what you are doing.
Mars retrograde is tremendously powerful, although the energy is not well-suited for forward motion. It is very well suited, however, for reinforcing or strengthening some aspect of your life.

thank you, i found this page (Mars in retro) very enlightening and helpful in thinking about and planning the rest of my year 2007.
2 · Maria · 6 October 2007
Hi Molly,
Your articles are always so insightful! Can you please tell me, for someone with Mars Rx right on midheaven of a lunar return (albeit, making all harmonious aspects)… would you advise them against making a major change (like a relocation) in that particular month? Or, should relocation be reconsidered altogether until Mars goes forward again by transit?
3 · Joyce · 13 October 2007
Hi Molly,
Could you explain how retrogade mars is well suited for strengthening an aspect of your life. Hope you are feeling better
4 · Molly · 14 October 2007
Joyce, Mars retro supports going back over existing structures and ideas. Not forward into something new.
Maria, I would advise someone to put off relocating if they have that kind of flexibility. Not only is the energy ill suited for a new beginning, moving takes a lot of physical energy which is just in shorter supply during Mars rx.
5 · rifka · 19 October 2007
I’m a writer and a journalist. How will writing be affected? I can push off deadlines, but the writing has to go on.
Thanks. I’m nervous about this!

Curious about mars rx, it sits natally opposing neptune and will cross that point in transit as well. Does this mean bosses and men will lie to me more? Seems to be the typical flow for me with this position anyway. Or will they open up (rx) without all the typical b.s.??
You’re great Molly, I like your wording.
Best, Cammy
7 · Molly · 29 October 2007
Cammy, I have Mars opposite Neptune in my natal chart as well. And usually what happens to me during transits to Neptune is, I’m way more sensitive than usual. I’ll break out, or get a migraine, or get food poisoning.
I haven’t noticed a trend of bosses and men lying, but I don’t put up with that kind of crap. If you have liars around you, chances are good that you’ll get lied to during a Neptune transit.

Molly,
My husband and I were thinking of listing our house for sale 11-8-07. Would Mars turning retrograde make this a bad move? My ascendent is Aries and both of us have a Scorpio Moon.
9 · kim · 31 October 2007
what would the mars retro mean to a capricorn 1/14/54? things have been horrible seems like forever…now i have this to look forward to? when will things change for a cap? thanks

I have mars in tauras in the first house ———————-what do you think?
Can you email me —————
THANK YOU!

Hey Maureen (and anyone else who is reading this)
You can find these things easily by searching on Google (if you just want a generic description of what house placements or other placements mean).
If you want something more personal and in-depth, then consult Molly for an astrological consultation. It’s really worth it! It’s like the difference between internet sex and real sex. But just for a quick fix, here’s a description of Mars in the First House that I found via google:
(from astrology-numerology.com)
First House
The Mars first house placement intensifies the assertiveness of the personality type described by your Ascendant. With any Ascendant, Mars in the first house increases the vitality, and produces a somewhat more assertive, more outgoing, and more energetic individual.
Your appearance is likely to be robust and muscular and you may be stronger that other members of your family of the same sex. You are always one to be directly involved in affairs; never an idle bystander. This element produces drive and creates more ambition and the aptitude for hard work, with a competitive drive for recognition and acclaim.
This position is usually considered, by traditionalists, to be more desirable for men than for women, because it displays the assertive characteristics associated with males. Females with this placement often have the self-confidence and competitive traits to enter and succeed in male dominated professions.
(This is taken from cafeastrology.com)
Mars in Taurus“Slow and steady wins the race” could easily be a motto for Mars in Taurus. These goal-oriented people are not known for their speed, but their staying power is tremendous.
Generally calm and easygoing people, Mars in Taurus natives can have powerful tempers when they’re overly provoked. They generally don’t fly off the handle as quickly as others, however (unless Aries is prominent in their chart).
Mars in Taurus people value strength and stability. They are driven by security and an especial fondness for personal possessions. Most are not afraid to work for what they want, and there is an overall patience to this position of Mars. If it takes a few years to achieve their goals, so be it.
People born under a Mars in Taurus are often rather sensual people. Some are slow to arousal, but theirs is an earthy and powerful sensuality.
Most have well-defined long-term goals and the determination to achieve them. They usually are not the type of people to take on too many projects at once. If they don’t think they can do it, they won’t! It is almost impossible to get these people moving once they’ve made up their minds on a matter. You want them to go shopping with you? Unfortunately for you, about half an hour back, they’ve kicked up their heels, changed into something comfortable, and they simply won’t budge. Immovable is the only way to describe Mars in Taurus people who have made up their minds. Adaptability is not their strong point.
In a similar vein, attempting to rush Mars in Taurus people is a lesson in frustration. They won’t alter their pace for most anything.
If you can get past these “quirks”, however, you’ll find that Mars in Taurus natives are often quite reliable and strong personalities. It may just be worth the wait!
Ok…that’s enough spam.
Google is your friend.
Your Uncle…

Hi Molly,
How do current projects that began prior to mars retrograde get impacted…or do they tend to remain “status quo” or get refined?
Thanks,
Ed
13 · Molly · 13 November 2007
Hi Ed— I reckon they’ll slow down a bit. It’s a good time to go over what you’ve accomplished, review your plans for the future.
14 · Hannah S-Q · 13 November 2007
When was the last Mars rx?
I’m trying to find something to compare it to.
Just curious…
15 · Hannah S-Q · 13 November 2007
Oh wow…
According to the last Mars RX, that was toward the end of my pregnancy with Pele and I was feeling very worn down and/or like crap and sleeping badly. My vitality was really really really low and I ended up having a hellish labor. She was born after the RX ended, though, on December 13. Hrm…
WELL then. We’ll see. :P
16 · Tracey · 13 November 2007
Hi Molly,
I have natal Mars in Cancer at 3.31 degrees, and I’m wondering if this will make Mars’ Rx through Cancer especially significant for me. Also, can you suggest a website that I could use to keep track of the degrees Mars will be traveling throughout the retrograde period?
17 · Molly · 13 November 2007
Hi Tracey— yup, Mars is going to roll right over your natal Mars. What you’re looking for is called an ephemeris. You can get one online, astro.com has them. Or you can purchase one in book format.
18 · vanessa · 15 November 2007
I have my mars in capricorn in the fourth house of home. And my cancer in the tenth house of careers.Lately these are the things that have been giving me a headache way before this retrogade period and just now im beginning to get on my feet. I’m a recent college grad it has been so hard for me to find a good job or let alone keep a job! I’m also moving in with my boyfriend during this retrogade period and I really want things to work between us. We waited all throughout mercury retrogade only to find out that mars is goin retro too! Does this mean we will not work out? How will this mars retrogade affect me? Everything new tht im doing cannot be postponed! I’ve been unstable for too long! Im already impatient n despert… What do you advise me to do? Will this all flake out?
Can anyone help I feel helpeless!
19 · Kimla · 15 November 2007
Hey Molly,
quick question:
My hubby has Mars rx in Scorpio the first house. Will he feel “normal” now that Mars is in rx motion?
20 · Molly · 15 November 2007
Vannessa, retrogRades are hard when you’re in an unstable place. Typically Mars retrograde is a slow, low energy time not well suited for first time endeavors. I do not know if that means your living situation will or won’t work out. Either way, the world will not end. It is what it is. Don’t freak out about the astrology, just keep breathing and handle it the best you can.
21 · Shaunn · 15 November 2007
If one has Mars in Scorpio what does that mean when Mars Rx’s? Would that be a more intense situation then with any other of the planets in Mars. Thanks
22 · Cammie · 15 November 2007
No wonder I’m having such a “bad luck” week! 2 flat tires (different times), ran into a stop sign, almost hit a deer, and the trash man forgot to pick up my trash (I have twin babies – stinky) I knew my planets had to be out of alignment.
23 · Hilary-Ann · 17 November 2007
I can’t believe this! As yet another affirmation, my entire email bombed and just disappeared – it was the one with my sob story of how everything EVERYTHING is going wrong right now.
Short version – the dream property – log cabin on the beach – has fallen through and I am terribly disappointed. Also my travel plans are just impossible to sort out. I am currently stuck in some god forsaken part of northern thailand without my passport (when I said everything, I meant it!). Just ready to pull out my hair and burst into tears. What a mess!
How can I lessen the impact of all this and try to retain my sanity?
At my wits end.
Hilary-Ann
24 · Molly · 17 November 2007
Hi Hilary-Ann—
I’m sorry you’re facing such daunting challenges. I know I would be enormously frustrated in your shoes. I think what may help you maintain your sanity is realizing you can make a situation better or worse by your attitude. You can see these things as stumbling blocks or building blocks. Sounds like it’s serenity prayer time.
God grant me the serenity to accept what I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
Retrograde Mars in Cancer = cultivate (cancer) inner (rx) strength (mars). And patience. Keep breathing. Click your heels together and repeat, "there's no place like home." Good luck.
25 · Maya · 21 November 2007
Do you interprete Mars at 0 degree, the very last degree or very 1st degree of a sign differently?
In general, how would 5 or more aspects to 1 planet (sun or moon) in a house that is aspected to Mars either with a trine, a square or multiple Mars aspects impact a chart?
3 or more conjunctions (w/i a couple of degrees) at the beginning or end of a house or spread between the end of one house and the beginning of the next one?
What’s an average number of aspects to see? What if s/1 has 5 or less or 15 or more aspects in a chart?
What if the whole chart seems to have everything in the beginning or end of houses and not scattered around houses?

Dear Molly,
Merry X-mas,sorry have trouble with writing. When Mars is retrograde I feel good and work better. My Mars was near a Stationary Point. What do you think? DOB 10-31-1956
27 · Dana · 7 January 2008
Hi Molly,
I like your site – very in-site-ful (sorry, couldn’t resist the pun!). Any words of wisdom for dealing with Mars Rx crossing over my I.C. at 4 degrees Cancer? It will be squaring natal Mercury in Libra in the 7th house and sextiling natal Uranus in Virgo in the 6th. Also squaring (loosely) my ascendant at 9 degrees Aries.
Thanks for any comments in advance,
Dana.

my sisters mars is in cancer & she recently lost her temper extremely bad with me. i know mars in cancer is not the best placement, so i was really curious about that. Also i have mars in leo, ascendent in aries, moon in capricorn & have been feeling very much out of energy??? please email me & let me know your thoughts on this, thanks
29 · Kelli · 4 February 2008
Hi Molly I am a Leo with mars in Libra. I met a man pretty fast and furious during the mars retro his bday is 11-22 he came in like gang busters and we talked for hours everyday from the 5th of Jan until the 15th of Jan. real good connection in my opinion but on the 16 he let me know that he wasn’t feeling it. Havent heard from him since. Did the Mars retro have anything to do with this quick in and out?
30 · kris · 15 December 2009
hi molly,
i know that under mars retrograde that one should not start new projects/endeavors.. how about something like switching to a new dentist/physician? ok to do so or better to wait until the retrograde period is over?
31 · Molly · 15 December 2009
I think switching to a new doctor or dentist would be ok, the idea is to scale back on projects that would require a huge expenditure of energy.
32 · angeltone · 17 December 2009
Hi molly,
Please I would like to ask you about marriage – I m aries (birthdate 01.04)- .I m engaged now and we plan to have the wedding on 10 April!! is it recommended or any changes might happen during the retrograd..or do you mean that i Have to rethink about the whole relationship!!!!!!
33 · Molly · 17 December 2009
Angeltone, I don’t know what else is going on in your charts, but Mars rx in itself is not a reason to put the brakes on your plans. If you can, pick a time for the ceremony when Mars is not angular. Even better if Venus and/or Jupiter are angular.
34 · Sabrina · 20 December 2009
Hi Molly
I’m expected to have surgery (late Jan 2010) on my right arm where the metal work is removed that was placed at my previous op in Nov 09 (Mars was in Leo then too). I’m Virgo rising and Mars will be retrograding in my 11th house, is it advisable to propone the op as energy levels are low or is this good sign as Mars seems to be in same position as when first op took place etc.
35 · C.C. · 20 December 2009
Hi Molly!
Thanks for an insightful and positive article! I have my sun, moon, n. node, uranus and mars all in Scorpio and conjunct in the second house. Can you think of anything in particular I may want to watch out for during this retrograde period? I am being considered for a promotion at work, and am hoping to hear a decision within a few days.
Thanks!

Hi Molly,
Found your predictions / comments really interesting, especially Mars in Taurus, would you please comment on the Mars in 9th house taurus with Venus, I have this placement in my horoscope
37 · Andalusia · 25 January 2010
My Mars is in Scorpio in my 9th House, squaring my Jupiter in Leo in my 6th House, then sextile Saturn in Virgo in my 7th House. I’m very much confused with this placement, but I know this contributes to my vile temper LOL & displacement.
38 · V · 31 January 2010
Wonderful! Here I was KNOWING that there was a reason for my feelings. Since December I’ve felt de-railed. I feel as if I have been waiting for the year to truly BEGIN. I sensed there was something in the air. Turns out there was something in the Stars.
Thanks.
V.

Hi there, I am a Scorpio, ascendant the same, moon in Gemini and mars in sagittarius( in opposition I guess?). Would Mars retrograde explain a lot of prickly familial situations at the moment…?
40 · Cristina · 20 February 2010
What about love in the retrograde period..? I met a nice guy over the internet a couple of weeks ago and we are planning to meet soon – is that a bad idea? Should I try to stall the first date until after the 9 of March?
I’m not sure he would understand if I talked about astrology in this case, so I would have to make something up in that case, which doesn’t feel good. But on other hand I really wish us to have a good start!
41 · Molly · 23 February 2010
When it comes to relationships, you can’t engineer things too much. At any rate, Mars governs other things like your energy level. Venus retro would be one to watch out for, but I think it’s fine. Don’t get too physical right away though. That’s good advice anytime, but especially with Mars retro.
