Saturn opposite Uranus: Fall 2008 - Summer 2010

Saturn opposite Uranus happens every 40 years or so. It is a culmination of a cycle that begins when Saturn conjoins Uranus. This year’s opposition is the culmination of the Saturn Uranus cycle that began in 1988. Last time we saw Saturn opposite Uranus was in the mid 1960s.
Astrologers watch the movement of planets through the heavens, which form and release connections with each other in a cosmic square dance. We can’t change the energy, but we can become aware of it and dance with the beat rather than against it. Astrological awareness is not a scary prediction of good or bad events to come. It is simply another piece of information you can use to make sense of things.

Saturn and Uranus are mortal enemies in mythology. They aren’t great together in astrology either. Their meeting signals tension and irritability, technology problems, and folks who are offbeat or out of step. Issues and problems that have been festering beneath the surface for a while are emerging in a way that probably shouldn’t surprise us, but it does. The rules of the game are changing, folks.
Saturn in Virgo affects our guts and digestive systems. Uranus in Pisces amps up the nervous energy in and around us, affecting our endocrine balance and sleep patterns. According to Ebertin in Combination of Stellar Influences, Saturn with Uranus brings “inhibitions of rhythm.”1
These inhibitions of rhythm kick us out of step on many levels— health, relationships, work. Disruptions in our routines. And we often experience electrical disturbances or technology problems when Uranus is under stress. Uranus energy brings change through instability. There are often sudden and unexpected events that shake our foundations and force us to look at things in a new way. This is the blessing of it. When old structures and connections are broken, we have the opportunity to update with something new and better.
Experiences
In my own experience with Saturn Uranus transits in my natal chart, the changes are unwelcome at first. Circumstances were foisted upon me from the outside, causing great inconvenience, discomfort and frustration. But in the end, if it hadn’t happened, I would still be stuck in that same old place. Saturn Uranus moved me out of my comfort zone and forced me to do something better. I have seen this happen with others too. If you’re struggling with changes right now, try looking at it with this new perspective. What opportunities is this pain-in-the-butt circumstance forcing you to explore?
On the world stage
Talk about discomfort in our world right now… presidential politics, volatility in the markets, an economy teetering on the brink— and this is just the beginning! This month’s opposition is the first of five occurrences that will take place between now and summer 2010. As such, it marks the beginning of a process, a rite of passage for our country that will have several intermediate events and steps along the way. I am hopeful that this is the beginning of something better for America.
Fear
What I have been noticing most with Saturn in Virgo and Uranus in Pisces is fear. It has come up a lot in my work with clients. Fear can get you all tied up in knots so that you aren’t thinking straight. Then you make bad decisions, which have bad consequences, which makes you more fearful. It’s a vicious cycle. If this sounds like you, here’s my advice— you need to realize that the fear is the #1 problem. The fear itself is, in all likelihood, a bigger problem than the object of your fear. Take care of the fear first. This is not so hard if you take it one step at a time. Remember to breathe deeply, remember to eat well, take care of your body and your mind. Nourish, nourish, nourish. Remember that what you focus on gets bigger. And you are in control of your focus. Don’t focus on how and where you are powerless. Focus on your options for solving the problem or making it through the hard times. And keep breathing!

Hello Molly,
thanks for this very interesting article! Do you see this opposition as one that has more influence on the big picture, such as politics and economics, or also on individual’s lives?
And would you have any comment for those who like me were born in the years 1965 and 1966 and have Uranus in Virgo and Saturn in Pisces in their natal charts, and what this current opposition might mean for us?
Many thanks!
Stephen
2 · Brina · 4 October 2008
Molly,
To expound on Stephen’s question…I too am curious of your take on this…especially since the Pisces total lunar eclipse of 2007 was at the same degree that the saturn/uranus opposition will be during it’s direct opposition in November ’08. Personally, this will fall within 1 degree of my natal Pluto. (10th house, Virgo). I’m both excited and intimidated. Any thoughts?
Brina
3 · Molly · 10 October 2008
Hi Stephen and Brina— it works on a big picture level (where the influence is obvious) and in individual lives. Obviously the stock market crash and economic changes are going to impact most of us on an individual level. If Saturn Uranus is activating your chart, I would look for its themes to show up in the indicated areas. In particular, the house where natal Uranus and Saturn are, and the house with Aquarius on the cusp. And read up on the Uranus opposition, aka Uranus opposite Uranus.
Brina, I hadn’t noticed the 07 Eclipse degree, but that’s interesting.

Dear Molly,
These are truly “exciting” times. Not only are nations and individuals dealing with this powerful transit, but, simultaneously, Saturn will be in quincunx to Neptune and Pluto will be making his Grande Entrance into Capricorn. Extravagance quickly switches to Frugality! The Pluto in Sagittarius years were certainly far to the wild side of extravagance. What do you think? Will we be able to transit over in an orderly manner (and many large organizations and policies will have to be radically altered to fit the “New World Order”), or will it happen like it has always happened in the past (with chaos and strife on a large scale)? Considering the circumstances, I think I would rather have the Saturn/Uranus sextile or trine at this time. Also, the quincunx is not noted for settled behavior, nor Neptune for sharp clarity and clear thinking. Even now everyone seems to be in such a joyous daze. As if the people who created this chaos are the ones with the “Tool Box” to fix it!! HaHaHaHa! Yikes! Like the Mogambo Guru http://www.dailyreckoning.com/Writers/Mogambo/DREssays/MG102408.html
says, “We’re Freaking Doomed”
My advice is to keep cool, friendly, moderate and positive and concentrate on good food, water, air and thoughts/emotions. You will become a beacon around which others flock in gratitude.
Best regards,
James

Dear Molly,
what was the exact date of the last saturn /uranus opposition
being a product teenager of the 60’s this started a movement
of radical thinking an a awareness of a deceptive government.

where to search for this exact date,, thanks for the info.. tom c.

Dear Molly,
Could you tell me how this opposition acts on me, if I am an Aquarius? I know that my rulers are these planets.
My life is under a great “construction” BTW. It seems to me that my life is to change itself. My “childish” (5th house) things found me again I mean all the activities I did enjoy when I was a child. The “child” is to wake up in me.
My rising is Leo, and my Moon is in Scorpio (connected to Jupiter and IC).

Dear Molly,
I have just found this site and find it really useful.
What you have said about the saturn/uranus opposition really resonates for me…I’m a cancerian with aquarius ascendent, uranus conjunct pluto in the 7th house and 6th house cusp) in virgo and saturn in pisces in the second house. I have always battled freedom vs discipline concept even though I am capable of both separately. Are the energies favorable for me to finally achieve the necessary balance?
Cheers Susie

Thank you for the information. In mythological(patriachal) terms the opposition is violent, releasing the creativity of Venus into the Ocean of Pisces. There is a mutual reception with Uranus – Neptune which may soften the process, allowing us to releas/dissolve the idea of conflict in this situation.
It is the loving mother Gaea who provides the Iron scycle to Cronus to act while the parents are united.
10 · larryc · 7 November 2008
How does the current Sat-Uranus opposition compare or contrast with the May 2000 Jup-Saturn conjunction? The latter is infrequent, too, about every 40 years as well? I might be well-off the mark with the cyclic repeating of Jup-Sat conjunctions.
Thanks for your insight.

Hi Larry— Jupiter moves faster than Saturn. They conjoin every 20 years.

Thank you for your article, Molly. I just wondered if this transit would have a particularly strong effect on someone with a Saturn-Sun conjunction who is experiencing a Saturn return right now?
13 · Renee · 13 November 2008
Hi Molly,
I’m a pisces/aries cusp sun sign, virgo moon sign, and aquarius rising. The reason I landed on this site was because I’m noticing some major changes in my life, and I think I’m approaching my saturn return (I was born in 1981). Am I? I also wonder if my signs mean that I’ll be especially affected by Uranus and Saturn in the next couple of years. (I’m not very knowledgeable in astrology, so I apologize if there are obvious answers to my questions)
Any advice/info you have would be much appreciated!

Hi Molly,
Just found your site….love it! In the past year I have taken a deep interest in astrology, thanks to a good friend that has guided me through some challenges. In my birth chart I have Saturn on 6th house (Piscis), and Uranus in Virgo my 12th, and now experiencing the opposite. I was told by my friend that my theme will always be duality…obviously you would have to look at my chart to know more. Would you have any immediate comments on this great opposition?
I am Virgo Sun, Virgo Acendant, Piscis moon. I must say that I am positive person, simply because all my life I have worked hard at making it so…reading about positive books, spirituality, daily meditation….etc. Even when things are not going my way or flowing smoothly, I find a way to turn it around, by focusing on my blessings and not my troubles…I have become my own best cheerleader, otherwise the world can become overwhelming. I have found that the inside work has to be done daily, not every once in a while, got to work on yourself each day. Well, if you have any comments I am certainly open and receptive to them….thank you!
Blessings and light,
Maria : )

Dear Molly,
Just one question, I’m in love with a Capricorn and I’m an Aquarious…..what does this mean for me? He doesn’t know I love him, because hes far away and I have no way to comunicate with him. I don’t mind public opinion so if you could just place your reply in the comment box on this page, I’d be fairly pleased.

16 · Molly · 18 December 2008
Allison, I can’t tell you anything about your potential together given just your Sun signs. But relationships require communication. Face to face interaction is a huge bonus. So your situation isn’t sounding good. Why don’t you look for someone a little more accessible?
17 · rhian · 13 January 2009
Dear Molly,
I just came across your article as I was looking for info on the upcoming Saturn/Uranus opposition in 2009.
I am struggling to work out exactly how this will affect me, but I know it will! because in my natal chart, I have Saturn in Pisces in the 4th house, opposite Uranus in Virgo in my 10 house. (MC and Pluto also in 10th house). I can feel the pressure now of the Saturn transiting my MC but I wonder what the opposition will bring. Would it be called a Mutual Reception Transition for me as the transit signs are opposite to my natal signs in these 2 planets?
any comments would be really useful, thank you

Hello Molly,
Saturn-Uranus opposition—-that explains a lot. I was born on the Capricorn-Aquarius Cusp, and have been feeling a little “out of my element”. Perhaps that is an understatement—-I’ve always considered myself to be a pretty typical Cappie, aside from the occasional “lightening” stirring the pot, but lately my inner-Aquarius has been running a one-man show. Facing another year of wayward identity crisis leaves me discouraged. Any hope on the horizon?
19 · Molly · 14 March 2009
Miranda, I think you need to change your perspective. You can’t change the energies, but you can change the way you engage with them. If you are constantly thinking this is about crisis and negativity, then everywhere you go, that is what you will see.
Saturn Uranus breaks up existing structures, and this creates rare opportunities. Focus on where you’re growing and changing, and put your energy into making the most of it.

Uranus Saturn: the thin line.

21 · Emily · 12 April 2009
Hi Molly,
My Virgo sun is at 18 degrees in the first house, and so was recently under pressure from Saturn/Uranus. I could write a book about how my life has changed. I had a crisis situation involving family, and have separated from my husband. Through it all, I have aquired a new business, and a far more fulfilling life and creative expression. So…yes, pain and feeling out of control, but as you said, rare opportunity as well. A lifetimes growth in the space of a year or less. Are important natal transits involving Uranus always so disruptive?
22 · Molly · 13 April 2009
Hi Emily, not always, only when you have been putting off needed change for so long that it takes an earthquake to move you.
23 · Emily · 15 April 2009
Hi Molly,
An earthquake, yep. Thats what it was. I have also heard a theory that if your natal planets are unsupported (in my case, the sun, which is squared by neptune and makes no other aspects) then the hard transits to that planet can be more painful or difficult to integrate.
Do you feel that this is true, or do you feel that it has more to do with taking a positive atittude to the transits and weather or not you are fulfilling your natal potential?
24 · Molly · 15 April 2009
I think in the case of Neptune, you can be soooo passive for soooo long and put up with sooo much that isn’t right for you, that the house comes down in a big way when the big kahuna hits. So it’s your attitude, yes, but also your choices. Make good, realistic choices from here on out, and next time that square gets hit, it shouldn’t have to hurt so much.
25 · Emily · 15 April 2009
Aha!
What useful advice! I tend to forget about things like
smart, good CHOICES in life and end up drifting along in an optimistic torpor. That neptune is a fuzzy critter. I always focus on a postitive attitude but obviously you have to have some good hard energy steering you the right way, discriminating (virgo). I always feel that neptune wants to deny my virgo sun it’s essential qualities. I often feel very uncomfortable critising anyone, to the point of allowing unacceptable behavior. Ok, I want a consultation, please!

I lost my job at 2:30 pm (EST) on February 5, 2009 after being there for only 11 months…..this partially explains why it happened as I was immensely unhappy being around co-workers who were hostile, cold, impolite and would have nothing to do with me….I am still unemployed and, although I really miss the fantastic salary, I realize I am happier away from that position as I found out later that the reasons given turned out to be lies! I am a better person now….

I think of this opposition as old versus new. It is also important to check out the degrees that these aspects make, especially if they go retrograde then direct then retrograde again. Its like a three time lesson. I have found that if these planets don’t really hit anything in your chart that the influence is minimal. My saturn is in Virgo and my moon in Pisces, they make an opposition also I am a dble Aq. I have noticed things pertaining to my mother, situations that required that I move forward and not react to old messages. We will see what else develops.

I found myself meditating on wanting to leave on that plane Uranus 11th but remembering I had a responsiblity to my little girl saturn in Virgo 5th.
Finding her she suddenly evolves to present age 47 and everything else is also exactly true to what is happening in her life. Revolves. An outworn outdated responsiblity updated. We shall go from there. I am 65. What shall be next? I’ve also been struggling with learning to burn and such and playing mind games on Lumosity.com and then my boy friend came to get me to take me to the beach and wammo suddenly he’s threatened with assault and I’m threatened with an eviction notice. It’s like wahhhh? BC Housing – could this have anything to do with the Upcoming Olympics. There’s big guns in cleaning up and camera’s and human rights an issue and I’m on line and some social agencies are talking about women being often forcibly evicted worldwide. I wasn’t alone. A native woman of 20 yr tenancy was going thro the same shock therapy. Why. Trying to help her down and out son survive. Little bending of the rules. So ya outside influences raise hell but I see it as a smooth transition from past responsiblities.
Just like I almost lost my breasts when Uranus went over my moon in Aq. Radical Mastectonmy but I didn’t.
30 · beth · 14 September 2009
Hi Molly; I just stumbled upon your site and I love it!
To clarify about this – would you say the opposition is eclipse-like, in that it brings sudden changes that are for the better and need to be made? (though, yes, I know it is not an eclipse – just comparing for clarity)
thanks!

I really agree with the fear thing! I think on an individual level, and on a societal level, there is alot of fear going on. Fear of losing one’s job, fear of becoming homeless, fear of getting sick and not having health insurance, fear of poverty, fear of not being able to be self-sufficient, fear of not being able to crawl out of the dark hole of poverty…people are scared.
On a societal level, we have fear of terrorism, terrorists, Muslims, flying in airplanes, traveling, the “liberal” agenda, the “conservative” agenda, inflation and the economy, socialism, and all the other evils that people like Rush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney tell us we should be afraid of.
34 · joywriter · 21 February 2010
good morning! i am looking for some insight on my saturn/uranus placement… i was born 1/23/67, so my natal saturn in pisces opposes my natal uranus in virgo. as a solar aquarius, these are my co-ruling planets. as a taurus rising, uranus is my 6th house and pisces is my 12th. saturn in the 12th seems to be a very difficult placement, particularly since it squares my moon in gemini and opposes my pluto, also in virgo. would this be what’s called an ‘afflicted’ saturn? i do have saturn in positive aspect (trine) to neptune and jupiter, but i wonder if these aspects only reinforce/enlarge the challenges and delusions, lol! the past couple of years have been fraught with challenges and upheaval, and i just wonder if there’s a feasibly happy end in sight. thanks in advance if you have any thoughts to share… feel free to email…

Well, here we are in count down April 1 tomorrow and what did the paper say today. Cuts to the welfare $‘s. Did they say rents? Are they serious?! Well, I’m sure that’ll twist a few disability people’s guts and cause a few sleepless nites. The Olympic’s are over so let’s throw them all out now on the streets. Maybe I read it wrong. Three weeks til saturn opposed uranus. I was around in the 60’s – role reversals – saturn in pisces then. Oh my husband was pisces, he suffered loss, saturn as we divorced due to the liberation movement.Well, actually I think Neptune was changing sign too and he got himself a triple virgo sexpot woman to replace me, a smart cool hippie with hips to match. Something he alway criticized me for, sitting on my big fat ass. Planetary Fall out. Sounds like army talk doesn’t it…

Howdy Molly…If I didn’t know any better, I would think you were outside my window, looking in at me, and inside my heart. Changes…oh gawly…I’ve got changes alright. Some of them good, some bad. My Jeep was stolen, but then I get another car by Wednesday thanks to my Mother. My parter left me on Saturday last week (my fault not his). This week we’ve been opening up to one another. My schedule is killing me at work, but I am noticing a lot of appreciation for the work I do. This is a mighty harsh yin yang kind of deal..knonwutimean? Life can be neither chaotic, nor orderly. Most times it comes down to an ordered chaos that we sail through on the oceans of time. The sea is in a tempest right now, but the calm weather to come will see me in a place better than I started out with. Saturn in Virgo indeed. I remember the pure deluxe hell of that era in the 70’s and over the past couple years. Here it is again to take another swat at me.
In the mean time Dear Lady, accept my thanks for you great insights, and the study you do to bring these forecasts to us.

Hi, Molly. I am writing because I am so worried about my daughter and grandaughter; 1/14/83 and 1/7/93, respectively. My son, died a sudden and horrible death on Oct 4, 2008 and my father passed six weeks before that. My daughter and GD are, both caps, are having a horrible time with grief and my daughter especially has had DUI, bad car acci. etc.; destructive behavior that is not like herself. She is a case manager for kis with severe mental and behavorial problems. Most of them have had serious abuse done to them. She began this job one month after her brothers death. I just believe it is all too much negative energy and it is starting to take her down too. She wants so badly to help children but I fear at this time in her life it may destroy her. And, as most know, social service fields make little money, so she cannot even come close to paying her bills after working so hard in college. I need help and suggestions for both of my beloved cappies. What sort of job could I push my daughter towards that would allow her to help childen without taking on all there negative energy herself and that would allow her a decent wage and how can I help her and my GD deal with the death of their brother/Father, respectively? This is gotten very serious and I fear the aspects every time they come around it seems these two become out of control or drowned in desperation???
44 · Stephen · 27 April 2010
Molly, Stephen here from comment #1 above. As the opposition draws to a close, I thought it would be interesting to summarise how it worked out in my life. Saturn in Pisces is in my 1st house, with Aquarius rising, and fear of emotion, in particular strong emotion and emotional entanglements, has been a leitmotif in my life. Needless to say, the opposing Uranus in Virgo in the 7th house of my natal chart pointed to a great need of freedom in personal relationships and need to define my own space and boundaries in them.
I have often wanted to crack open those shells, and I have to say, the past two years have been very positive in that regard – I am much better able to assert myself, stick to a position (even if someone else throws a temper to frighten me out of it), and addess unsatisfying interpersonal situations in general. Most of this came as a result of challenges at work and yes, some of it was highly challenging (in Uranian fashion) while it happened.
I also find it very significant that on the day Uranus was exactly conjunct my natal Saturn (20 April), I re-started a training course to be certified in Mediation (Alternative Dispute Resolution), which I had failed before. Fingers crossed that with the energy of the conjunction, I will pass this time!
Just goes to show that even a challenging opposition can be very positive on an individual level. I would love to know how others born in 1965/66 experienced these two years!

Thanks, Molly. I am up now from a restless night of sleep in which a visitor to a student in my college turned out to be a terrorist, I thought so! And in the next dream-scene, a young woman is at the wheel, getting ready to drive away after having stole $10,000 from a terrorist cell.
After reading your insights, I got that if I let Saturn have his rule over discipline in health and diet, I can redirect resources now dedicated to fear toward allowing younger/female energies to drive me onward.

Dea Molly,
Thanks for these great informative articles and comments. I have a situation with this Sat-Uranus opposition that is very hard and I must confess, I’ve been through a very tough period in my life, the toughest I guess.
My Sun and Mar are 27 ° and 26° in Virgo and the Ancendant is at 29° Piscis, so this opposition is triggering a change in my relationships. My verrtex is at 27° Scorpio, and my progressed mercury is at 29° Scorpio.
Do you think it is the right time to make BIG change in my frustrating relationship sector? Are planets indicating I have to move to a greener pasture and be happier? How long will this oppositiom last?
Thanks, Molly!!!

He is not conscious of my heart not needing the pressure.
I am not willing to be misquided, misinterpreted etc.
