Saturn opposite Uranus
Fall 2008 – Summer 2010
Saturn opposite Uranus happens every 40 years or so. It is a culmination of a cycle that begins when Saturn conjoins Uranus. This year’s opposition is the culmination of the Saturn Uranus cycle that began in 1988. Last time we saw Saturn opposite Uranus was in the mid 1960s.
Astrologers watch the movement of planets through the heavens, which form and release connections with each other in a cosmic square dance. We can’t change the energy, but we can become aware of it and dance with the beat rather than against it. Astrological awareness is not a scary prediction of good or bad events to come. It is simply another piece of information you can use to make sense of things.

Saturn and Uranus are mortal enemies in mythology. They aren’t great together in astrology either. Their meeting signals tension and irritability, technology problems, and folks who are offbeat or out of step. Issues and problems that have been festering beneath the surface for a while are emerging in a way that probably shouldn’t surprise us, but it does. The rules of the game are changing, folks.
Saturn in Virgo affects our guts and digestive systems. Uranus in Pisces amps up the nervous energy in and around us, affecting our endocrine balance and sleep patterns. According to Ebertin in Combination of Stellar Influences, Saturn with Uranus brings “inhibitions of rhythm.”1
These inhibitions of rhythm kick us out of step on many levels— health, relationships, work. Disruptions in our routines. And we often experience electrical disturbances or technology problems when Uranus is under stress. Uranus energy brings change through instability. There are often sudden and unexpected events that shake our foundations and force us to look at things in a new way. This is the blessing of it. When old structures and connections are broken, we have the opportunity to update with something new and better.
Experiences
In my own experience with Saturn Uranus transits in my natal chart, the changes are unwelcome at first. Circumstances were foisted upon me from the outside, causing great inconvenience, discomfort and frustration. But in the end, if it hadn’t happened, I would still be stuck in that same old place. Saturn Uranus moved me out of my comfort zone and forced me to do something better. I have seen this happen with others too. If you’re struggling with changes right now, try looking at it with this new perspective. What opportunities is this pain-in-the-butt circumstance forcing you to explore?
On the world stage
Talk about discomfort in our world right now… presidential politics, volatility in the markets, an economy teetering on the brink— and this is just the beginning! This month’s opposition is the first of five occurrences that will take place between now and summer 2010. As such, it marks the beginning of a process, a rite of passage for our country that will have several intermediate events and steps along the way. I am hopeful that this is the beginning of something better for America.
Fear
What I have been noticing most with Saturn in Virgo and Uranus in Pisces is fear. It has come up a lot in my work with clients. Fear can get you all tied up in knots so that you aren’t thinking straight. Then you make bad decisions, which have bad consequences, which makes you more fearful. It’s a vicious cycle. If this sounds like you, here’s my advice— you need to realize that the fear is the #1 problem. The fear itself is, in all likelihood, a bigger problem than the object of your fear. Take care of the fear first. This is not so hard if you take it one step at a time. Remember to breathe deeply, remember to eat well, take care of your body and your mind. Nourish, nourish, nourish. Remember that what you focus on gets bigger. And you are in control of your focus. Don’t focus on how and where you are powerless. Focus on your options for solving the problem or making it through the hard times. And keep breathing!

Hello Molly,
thanks for this very interesting article! Do you see this opposition as one that has more influence on the big picture, such as politics and economics, or also on individual’s lives?
And would you have any comment for those who like me were born in the years 1965 and 1966 and have Uranus in Virgo and Saturn in Pisces in their natal charts, and what this current opposition might mean for us?
Many thanks!
Stephen

Molly,
To expound on Stephen’s question…I too am curious of your take on this…especially since the Pisces total lunar eclipse of 2007 was at the same degree that the saturn/uranus opposition will be during it’s direct opposition in November ’08. Personally, this will fall within 1 degree of my natal Pluto. (10th house, Virgo). I’m both excited and intimidated. Any thoughts?

Hi Stephen and Brina— it works on a big picture level (where the influence is obvious) and in individual lives. Obviously the stock market crash and economic changes are going to impact most of us on an individual level. If Saturn Uranus is activating your chart, I would look for its themes to show up in the indicated areas. In particular, the house where natal Uranus and Saturn are, and the house with Aquarius on the cusp. And read up on the Uranus opposition, aka Uranus opposite Uranus.
Brina, I hadn’t noticed the 07 Eclipse degree, but that’s interesting.

Dear Molly,
These are truly “exciting” times. Not only are nations and individuals dealing with this powerful transit, but, simultaneously, Saturn will be in quincunx to Neptune and Pluto will be making his Grande Entrance into Capricorn. Extravagance quickly switches to Frugality! The Pluto in Sagittarius years were certainly far to the wild side of extravagance. What do you think? Will we be able to transit over in an orderly manner (and many large organizations and policies will have to be radically altered to fit the “New World Order”), or will it happen like it has always happened in the past (with chaos and strife on a large scale)? Considering the circumstances, I think I would rather have the Saturn/Uranus sextile or trine at this time. Also, the quincunx is not noted for settled behavior, nor Neptune for sharp clarity and clear thinking. Even now everyone seems to be in such a joyous daze. As if the people who created this chaos are the ones with the “Tool Box” to fix it!! HaHaHaHa! Yikes! Like the Mogambo Guru http://www.dailyreckoning.com/Writers/Mogambo/DREssays/MG102408.html

My advice is to keep cool, friendly, moderate and positive and concentrate on good food, water, air and thoughts/emotions. You will become a beacon around which others flock in gratitude.
Best regards,
James

Dear Molly,
Could you tell me how this opposition acts on me, if I am an Aquarius? I know that my rulers are these planets.
My life is under a great “construction” BTW. It seems to me that my life is to change itself. My “childish” (5th house) things found me again I mean all the activities I did enjoy when I was a child. The “child” is to wake up in me.
My rising is Leo, and my Moon is in Scorpio (connected to Jupiter and IC).

Dear Molly,
I have just found this site and find it really useful.
What you have said about the saturn/uranus opposition really resonates for me…I’m a cancerian with aquarius ascendent, uranus conjunct pluto in the 7th house and 6th house cusp) in virgo and saturn in pisces in the second house. I have always battled freedom vs discipline concept even though I am capable of both separately. Are the energies favorable for me to finally achieve the necessary balance?
Cheers Susie

Thank you for the information. In mythological(patriachal) terms the opposition is violent, releasing the creativity of Venus into the Ocean of Pisces. There is a mutual reception with Uranus – Neptune which may soften the process, allowing us to releas/dissolve the idea of conflict in this situation.
It is the loving mother Gaea who provides the Iron scycle to Cronus to act while the parents are united.

How does the current Sat-Uranus opposition compare or contrast with the May 2000 Jup-Saturn conjunction? The latter is infrequent, too, about every 40 years as well? I might be well-off the mark with the cyclic repeating of Jup-Sat conjunctions.
Thanks for your insight.

Hi Larry— Jupiter moves faster than Saturn. They conjoin every 20 years.

Thank you for your article, Molly. I just wondered if this transit would have a particularly strong effect on someone with a Saturn-Sun conjunction who is experiencing a Saturn return right now?
13 · Renee · 13 November 2008
Hi Molly,
I’m a pisces/aries cusp sun sign, virgo moon sign, and aquarius rising. The reason I landed on this site was because I’m noticing some major changes in my life, and I think I’m approaching my saturn return (I was born in 1981). Am I? I also wonder if my signs mean that I’ll be especially affected by Uranus and Saturn in the next couple of years. (I’m not very knowledgeable in astrology, so I apologize if there are obvious answers to my questions)
Any advice/info you have would be much appreciated!
Renee
