Here is the glyph for the Moon, a crescent.
The Moon represents your emotional side, patterns established in early childhood, your style of caretaking, and what you need in order to feel emotionally secure.
The Moon rules
Cancer
The Moon represents these qualities:
*Emotions, Moods, Receptivity, Capacity for Nurturing
Habit patterns
Security needs, Self-indulgence
Home*
The Moon represents these people:
Your Mother, Women
and these parts of the body:
The Breasts and stomach
- The Moon represents emotional patterns established in early childhood.
- The Moon represents a need. For example, Moon in
Leo needs approval, needs to feel appreciated and respected. If the need is not met in early childhood, the person will display emotionally the shadow side of Leo: insecurity and excessive egoism. - The Moon in most charts describes your experience of your mother. Moon in
Gemini, she’s intelligent, talkative, or flighty, Moon in
Pisces has an artistic, spiritual, addicted, or entirely spaced-out mother. - The Moon represents how you deal with emotions, or don’t. For example, Moon in
Taurus hates to rock the boat. Moon in
Virgo needs a sense of order, and worries and criticizes when emotionally stressed. Moon in
Gemini talks about emotions, or is flighty and hard to pin down. - The transiting Moon’s symbolism takes a back seat to her role as a trigger and focuser of the energies. As she is the fastest moving body in the chart, she carries messages and energies between slower planets and will often set off a more long term formation or aspect.

Hi Molly,
Does having a Moon in Scorpio in the 4th house signify intensity in this house? Or deep emotional roots? Am I off-base?
2 · Molly · 28 February 2006
Hi Britney,
Yes, you are right. Scorpio is a deeply emotional sign, and the 4th is an emotional house, house of roots, house of memories. Do you tend to hold on to the past?
3 · Britney Skye · 28 February 2006
I probably do. And I am very emotional, sensitive to memories of the past and of my heritage as well. But even moreso than that, I am a homebody, to the fullest extent. I even work from home. And I love it. I hate apartments. I love a nice home. Im guessing my moon in the 4th house reflects that? Mars is also conjunct my moon in the 4th house, too.
Oh Molly do your new moon wishes today, from what Jan Spiller says. It’s still within the 48-hour time-frame of the new moon! I did mine yesterday!

im a sun in scorpio in 8th house with a moon in aquirius in 12th house and a pisces rising does this leave any room for an outgoing personality because im not shy or withdrwn n love to laugh… but im more like aquirius rising. what do you think?
5 · Jake Cunningham · 22 March 2006
Hi Molly!
My Moon is at 0 degrees Leo in the 3rd House.
Does this mean I can read descriptions of Cancer and Leo?
When a planet is in an early degree of a sign, is it possible to read the sign its in, but also the one before it? (like Cancer – Leo)?
Thanks so much in advance, (trying to understand this stuff)
6 · Molly · 24 March 2006
Hi Jake.. nope, that's a Leo Moon. Boundaries between houses are a little fuzzy, but between signs they are solid. Cancer is Cancer, and Leo is Leo.
Bonnie, these parts of your chart you describe do suggest an emotional, inwardly focused aspect to your personality. But they do not rule out laughter! Other planets in your chart likely suggest a higher energy level.

Hi,
I have a moon in cancer and I’ve been readinf up on it a lot lately and it’s freaking me out that most of the articles make it sound that with this placement my emotions pretty much rule my existance, which is something that would explain a lot of the problems I’ve had throughout my life. My sun is in Aquarius and my ascendant is Pisces. Can you give me some points in any of those that i can maybe focus on so to not let my emotions control every aspect. From what I’ve been reading, my personality seems to be mushy and indecisive and i need something to concentrat on and change that up a bit.
Thank you.
Natalie

Hi Natalie— Everyone has a Saturn in their chart. Which represents duties, responsibilities, reality, and it’s the ruler of logical Aquarius, your Sun sign. You can’t turn off the emotions, but you can balance things out by living in a practical and responsible way, that is responding to your emotions in a mature way. I’m not saying you don’t do this; I don’t even have your chart.
Most people who are entirely ruled by their emotions don’t understand that they are; they think they are completely rational. So you are probably doing fine. Aquarius has detachment as one of its gifts; I do think you have it in you. But it is a weird time for Aquarians with Neptune moving through your sign nowadays.

Molly,
As far as compatibility goes, if I’m a pisces with a moon in Libra, is there a way to make things work with an Aquarius with a moon in Cancer 1/28/83 is her birday?
Any possible suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Brandon

Aquarians like their space, and Cancerians like closeness and nurturing. She’s both. So recognize there are times she’ll want to cuddle, and times she’ll want to detach and have some space from you.
The way to her heart is to make sure she knows you’re there for her and she can trust you. But don’t smother her with jealousy or drama. Just let her go do her thing when she needs to.

Hi Molly,
I’m casually dating a guy who’s a scorpio with a gemini moon. He travels w/his job and I rarely see him. From what I’ve read having a gemini moon he may tend to be flighty and untruthful, traits that I’m beginning to fear he has. I’m a cancer w/aquarius moon. Should i run from this gemini moon?
12 · Molly · 5 January 2007
Hi Tracey— it doesn’t sound so bad to me. Gemini Moon can take a lot of forms. Flighty and untruthful is only one of them. Get to know your guy before you decide to bolt. The astrology is only one part of the picture.
There’s actually a pretty interesting discussion about this topic happening on my forum.
13 · Susan · 14 March 2007
If a man has Sun, mercury and mars in Aquarius, will a moon in Pisces offset his aversion to relationships or will he remain distant? Will he acknowledge his emotions or just think about them?
14 · Molly · 15 March 2007
Difficult question, Susan.
Aquarians are not necessarily averse to relationships as you put it. They do tend to dislike drama, flowery displays of emotion. ultimatums, etc. So you are better off not leaning on him about it. If you are. I don't know.
But I guess your man seems to you to be averse to relationships, or you wouldn't be asking the question.
The short answer is, I don't know. Not enough info. And I am not in the business of saying what someone will do. Surely your man is capable of emotion. With a Pisces Moon, he is, without a doubt, very sensitive. Whether he will open up to you is up to him. Maybe he isn't ready to share his feelings. Or maybe his 'way' is so different from yours, that the two of you aren't connecting.
What I do know, is that you can't force a pearl out of an oyster without killing it, and you can't force a man to open up. Especially not an Aquarius.
Just throwing out some guesses. I have very little info to work with.

My sun is in gemini and my moon is in scorpio (moon in fifth house). How does my moon in my fifth house contribute to my personality?
Also my rising is in cancer and people often say okay mom to me sarcastically. Actually, I had someone call me their mom on accident. I do kind of mother and watch over everyone but is that a correlation between my moon and rising sign?
16 · Molly · 4 April 2007
okay, Mom. Too funny. The ascendant is your approach, and Cancer rising would come off in a motherly way.. anyone else out there with Cancer rising care to comment?
Moon in the 5th house is creative, bossy, a leader. Scorpio is very deep, nurturing, and feels everything very intensely. Can be quite ruthless sometimes when hurt or betrayed.
I don't think you necessarily need to link the two, though. Your Cancer ascendant is enough to explain "okay Mom." :)

Yes, I am a sixteen-year-old girl with Cancer rising and a first house Moon. I’m always coming off as quiet and gentle and motherly. It’s actually gotten me into some trouble at times. Without being too specific, there have been times when I have been so avaliable to my friends who need help that once they have sensed my care and concern they ring me up day and night wanting to dump their load on me. Sometimes even I need my space too (Venus in the twelfth house in my chart). I’m always alone when I never want to be and bothered when I want to be alone. Never been lucky that way.

I am a Leo sun with a Scorpio moon, how in the world do i get these two sides of my personality to start cooperating with one another? LOL!
I am probably the least Leo person I know, most of my traits seem to be more Scorp than Leo. What is this all about? Also, would this be why there is a Scorpio male trying to “chase me down”?
Any help would be MUCH appreciated!!

Does one’s moon sign influence how one acts in a relationship? I’m a gemini sun, virgo moon… I’m wondering if my virgo moon makes me a more stable partner in a relationship (which is a trait that’s seemingly developed as of recently) or if relationships are more influenced by venus (my venus is in taurus). I suppose I’m just looking for some insight into how all the planets play into personal relationships – romantic and platonic.
20 · Molly · 13 November 2007
Cat, sorry for taking so long to answer your question. It’s a good one. I think the only way to manage a square like this is through awareness. Be aware that who you are and what you need are sometimes at cross purposes. Find a non-destructive way to satisfy both sides of your personality. Both of these signs tend to be somewhat controlling, so you have to be sure to let the folks around you be themselves too. If you don’t fall into destructive patterns, the inner tension generated by the square can be really productive. Squares = drive, and some of the most successful people have the most difficult charts.
Regina, the Sun represents your character, and Venus represents relationships. Virgo is not in itself a stable energy— it’s a mutable sign. If you’re a stable partner, it’s the Venus in Taurus. Lucky you— with your Sun and Moon both in mutable signs, without that Venus in Taurus you might be quite flaky.

That’s interesting. My mom is a Scorpio with Moon and Rising in Leo, and I could totally see how that could conflict, but I do think they have a lot in common (both fixed signs—protective, etc)
My mom ALWAYS knew what was going on with me at all times. Spooky. Then again she had 3-4 other planets in Scorpio.
I say honor who you are!! It’s what makes you interesting.
:D

Hi i have a moon in Taurus and was wondering: If i was born before the sun rose does that mean my moon chart is the most powerful? Help would be very much appreciated.
23 · Molly · 26 June 2008
Hi Ozrichelle— there is no such thing as a Moon chart. If you were born at night, that makes the Moon more powerful in your chart. Therefore you may outwardly display more characteristics of your Moon sign than your Sun sign. Especially if the Moon is above the horizon (the asc/dsc axis). If the Sun is below the horizon, you were born at night.

Can moon tell us what is our attitude toward alimentation?
26 · Natalie · 4 October 2008
Hello,
My sun is in Leo and moon in Aquarius. I struggle a lot with these placements because I feel the conflict between my ego-Leo and my personality-Aquarius. It’s really annoying! I also have Leo rising which makes me extra egotistical. Leo makes me want to be open and always seeking attention, and Aquarius resents me for it! It’s like having someone watching and analyzing every little thing I do! I tend to get paralyzed with thought and no action. However I believe that my Aquarian moon is what has drawn me to love and want to study astrology. Any tips on how I can better integrate these two signs????
Thanks!!!!

My chart has sun/sagittarius, asc/aquarius, and moon/capricorn. I feel completely foreign from my emotions and when dealing with them I feel like I am lieing or making up assumptions about my life and others. The “life in the moment” makes it difficult to even analyze past memories or align an emotion with certain situations. How can I help myself become more in tune with my inner self?
28 · Molly · 10 October 2008
Hi Natalie— hard to say with out knowing your chart, but maybe some meditation and/or reiki work would help. Same for you, Grant. Meditation, dream work, psychotherapy, journaling. If you want to know someone well, you spend a lot of time with them. Same goes for your inner self. Make it a priority.
29 · Amy · 13 October 2008
Hi all! Just adding some personal insight into the moon expression. I’m a Scorpio, Cancer moon, moon in the ascendent. Even though as a Scorpio I have a very powerful personality it is my Cancer moon that people seem to gravitate to firstly. I am a “mother hen” and have been for as long as I can remember. In 8th grade I remember playing ‘Mrs. Cunningham’ in a school play about “Happy Days”. I was chosen for the role, against my wishes, unanimously! Even though I’m the youngest sister, I’m always the one my siblings turn to for advice. So to the 16y/0 who finds all the caring overwhelming, I can truly empathize! What you will have to learn to do is to recognize that it is okay to help others, just not at the expense of yourself. It took me a loooooong time to figure this out and a lot of heartbreak and disappointment. So save yourself the therapy sessions and learn early on that you must care for yourself before you care for anyone else. Hope this helps.

I am very good friends with a man whose moon in gemini conjuncts my moom and asc in gemini and whose North node is almost exactly on my sun. Also, my South Node conjuncts his asc. This is a platonic relationship but a VERY emotional one, which perplexes me seeing it is not romantic. Does this make any sense at all? I feel VERY emotionally accountable toward him but there is not a sexual or romantic connectio really aside maybe a chiron conj venus…its all very srange to me because I feel closer to him and in a karmic way than to anyone I’ve ever been romantically linked to.
33 · Molly · 31 October 2008
I don’t know, Shelly. It may be that one or both of you aren’t ready. There’s nothing like going to bed with your best friend every night… but you can’t force it if the chemistry isn’t there. Good luck.
