Houses are divisions of the birth chart. Each house represents a different area of life.
In order to calculate your houses correctly, you must have an accurate birthtime. The less precise the time, the less certain we are where the houses begin and end in your chart.
A planet’s house placement in your chart tells you where in your life that planet’s energy tends to show up. For example, if Jupiter, planet of abundance, is in your 7th house of relationships, this means you have good luck in relationships, and abundance of people around you.
- The
Sun’s house: where you shine, where you are most creative, where you put a great deal of your life force energy
- The
Moon’s house: where you can use your instincts for benefit. Here you tend to fluctuate and are likely to be moody.
Mercury’s house: where you have the gift of gab and deal with information frequently. On the flip side, it’s what you run your mouth about
Venus’s house: a source of satisfaction—where you like things to be smooth, beautiful and free from conflict
Mars’ house: where you are speedy, competitive, argumentative, energetic, like to do things alone
Jupiter: where you have good luck and abundance, where you do things in a big way
Saturn’s house: where you have to work hard for what you’ve got, where you are very responsible but may limit yourself too much.
Uranus’ house: where you have sudden insights and flashes of genius! Here you experience frequent changes, need lots of freedom
Neptune’s house: where you experience connection with spiritual energies and are very psychic. However, you have a tendency to wear rose colored glasses, thus you may be easily deceived.
Pluto’s house: The source of your deepest power, and your deepest fears. Where you experience extremes—highs and lows, where you may need to open up and be more vulnerable

How does our birth-time affect the houses? sorry, but I am confused….
2 · Eme · 17 March 2006
The birth time affects which planets fall in which houses and determines your rising sign.
3 · Molly · 17 March 2006
Nick—I have an explanation on this page.
4 · Charlly Bedard · 8 June 2006
What would Uranus on the ascendant or in the first house by progression mean in terms of freedom needs?
5 · Molly · 8 June 2006
I suppose it would mean you need lots of it… and progressed Uranus doesn’t move fast, so get used to it!

I’m wondering about my compatibility with my boyfriend because our nodes are so different.
Does this have the makings for “karmic hell”?
Me: Sun-Virgo, Asc-Scorpio, Moon-Leo
Nodes: North in Aquarius, South in Leo
Him: Sun-Leo, Asc-Gemini, Moon-Cancer
Nodes: North in Libra, South in Taurus
Can you advise?
7 · Molly · 31 July 2006
Nell,
Karmic Hell I don’t know. I don’t tend to see things in such dramatic terms. Judging only from what you gave me, it doesn’t sound that bad.
p.s. The nodes are always opposite one another. So it’s impossible for your boyfriend to have north in Libra, south in Taurus.

How much, if any, significance is placed in the planets positions within a house that is near one of the angles, or bordering another house?
For instance, my moon sign is in Scorpio, but is at 29, and very nearly within Sagittarius. Does this hold any weight? Is my moon sign, while Scorpio, also partly Sagittarius, or could lean in its direction?
This ‘close to the borders’ deal crops up a few times in my chart, and I’m curious if it means more than just a few numbers, which I kinda tend to doubt.

Something “seems” a bit wonky with the website, but it could be me. Nevertheless…
My Question is: What can you tell me about synastry, i.e., compatibility-wise. Is there a book available that you can recommend?
What I’m looking for is something that tells you How you Affect someone’s else’s chart, etc. as if you were to do an overlay. Example: How does someone else’s Venus in your 12th house run it’s energy on you.
I hear things like, if someone’s Venus is in your 12th it typically is a disappointing outcome, or anothers Sun/Moon in your 12th means separation (by whom, I don’t recall), or Mars activates specific activities there.
Does this make sense and IS it important? Isn’t the composite chart more indicative of mutual energy, vs. what I’m addressing. It doesn’t have to be lovers, but people, children the whole wash basin of interacitons.
I think this would be useful since we all have our blindspots, but if we know where we might be pushing the wrong buttons, we could better manage our actions whereby not triggering someone else’s reaction negatively or the like.

My partner is a Pisces, born just before midnight on March 16th, 1956 in Durban, South African.
Could you please calculate his ascendent for me?

Dear Molly, I have a very hard time emotionally and psycically this last yera will it get better? I was bore January 10th 1951. In Norfolk Virginnia at 1:12 am. Also how much would you charge for three charts would I get a discount? Thank you Susan 2054
13 · Molly · 15 March 2007
Hi Susan—
Oh wow. I see what’s going on. It’s similar to what I have going on right now.. a Neptune transit. Mine is to Venus and the Moon. Yours is to Pluto, Mars, and the Moon. These three planets are closely connected in your chart. Having Neptune touching off this thing is a bugbear!
Neptune represents the unseen world, the psychic realms, the place beyond the physical. It gives you more access and more sensitivity to those realms than you usually have. Creativity, subtlety, art, music, sublime notions. But iit’s difficult to stay grounded and realistic during a Neptune transit. Instead, we tend to be idealistic, spacey, and confused. The energy feels “mushier” than usual, and with Neptune transiting your Mars, your physical energy is mushy too.
Neptune makes you super sensitive to all kinds of subtleties. So it’s a great time to work with things like flower essences and homeopathy, because they work on the emotional & subtle body. Be sure to work with someone who knows what they’re doing.
A lot of people experience hormonal shifts or imbalance during a Neptune transit. That’s something to watch. I have had great success treating myself with herbs. Your mileage may vary, but so far, I have stayed on a pretty even keel. Again, another instance when it’s great to be working with someone who knows what they’re doing.
The Neptune transit hangs around for a couple of years, until Neptune passes your Moon at 22 Aquarius, early in 2009. BUT!! Things will start feeling less heavy pretty soon. At the moment, Saturn is also in the mix. Saturn is restrictive, limiting, and brings you lots of demands. Saturn is transiting your Pluto right now. He will make one more pass through this Moon-Mars-Pluto thing in your chart. Once this is finished, around early July, I think things will begin to settle down for you.
In the meantime, it doesn’t have to be bad. It can be very constructive if you take care of business to the best of your ability. Clarify your priorities, pay your dues, work on boundaries and building trust, being trustworthy, deciding to what and whom are you accountable.
I don’t charge by the chart, but by the hour. I don’t have any kind of package deal. I don’t want you to feel like you have to have another reading with me, if you happened not to like me after the first!

[re: Planets / Houses]
Hello, North-Node!
I just discovered your site today and i like it a lot. Thank you. It has provided new clarity for me that was missing when interpeting my chart. Especially the stuff on the Nodes, as well as your commentary on the Houses. But i am still a little confused. The quote below from the text above, is NOT confusing at all, and is precisely what i’m looking for:
“if Jupiter, planet of abundance, is in your 7th house of relationships, this means you have good luck in relationships, and abundance of people around you.”
or this one:
“if, for example, your charts Uranus, the planet of rebellion, in the first house, the House of Self, you may seem a little odd to others, because you wear your individuality on the surface”
What i’m looking for are simplified statements, like these excellent ones above, for each and every planet, in each and every house.
Appreciatively,
Jack of Zoom

Hi Molly – I am wondering whether you might give me some insight into a very difficult past 5 yrs!! My birthdate is 8/14/1957 San Francisco at 11:47 a.m. I think Neptune is 10 degrees in my first house. This past week has been difficult beyond belief, and since summer 2003 things have been mostly difficult with short periods only of some ease. Any thoughts? Thank you very much for your site.

Hi,
My sun (which is in sag), mars(in sag) and neptune (can’t recall) all in the twelfth house. I have been told that this combo is difficult as it creates a lack of groundedness and ability to set boundaries. Does anyone have any comments? I was also born during a mercury retrograde period and have read pretty mixed ideas about this too.
Cheers,
F

Yes, 12th house placements can be spacey and ungrounded, but also quite subtle and tuned in. Natal Mercury retro isn’t bad either. I have this and it’s a good placement for this kind of work and its internal focus. We tend to have a lot of internal chatter going on. I have an article on natal retrogrades on this site that you might check out.
19 · Freesia · 30 May 2008
Hi Molly,
Thank you for the response. And yes!Internal chatter indeed;can be very distracting!& at times not so good when a quick response is required. How do you manage it? Is writing a good way?
Cheers,
Freesia

I have just found this site – so glad I have, it is brilliant, thank you. There has been something puzzling me for a long time now. I have been divorced for more than 24 years – no relationships in that time (didn’t want one) now I am looking for someone to share my life but I have nothing in my 4th, 5th,7th, 8th and 9th houses. Does this mean I am fated to be alone? my dob details are:-

No it does not.
This article touches on empty houses.
23 · krystal · 18 August 2008
Dear Molly, I’m comfused because I was reading a book on planets and signs and each planet has a sign and each house has its own sign and planet. Then I looked up my natal chart and it threw me off. When a planet is in a sign or house that it doesn’t belong in does it have a diffent meaning and what about when a house doesn’t have any planet at all just the sign in it does it mean that that house is completely empty and doesn’t mean anything in your life. I feel slow for asking more then likely its something obvious and I’m making it complicated.
Sun-Can, Asc-Gemini, Moon-Pisces
I only put that cause I like my combinations, I also have another question I looked up my natal chart my north node is taurus but it doesn’t show south node.
24 · Krystal · 18 August 2008
lol nvm you answered my question above I looked over that page atleast 4 or 5 times I see the answer now thanks

In my natal chart I have Jupiter in my twelve house opposing Pluto in my 6th. I also have Chiron in my 12th. I am very content on my journey of self discovery however lately I am stumbling with conflicting information with this 12th house. Yeah, I have Aries rising. I have also been having dreams that have been cumming true, around about the time Neptune conjunct my moon, witch is in my tenth, my mercury is also in my tenth. Pluto is starting to transit my ninth (in cap), where my sun is. Can you help me find a good book/s.

Is there a website to find out where your planets are in what house? I am still confused as to knowing where my planets are. If I am a Scorpio-Mercury than does mercury live in my 8th house?

Michael – start with your birth chart.

Hi Molly 3.3.1976 Auckland NZ
I have my sun in the secound house in pices. Sun is in detriment in Pices and it’s in the secound house. I feel I don’t shine at anything in piticular is it because my sun is in detriment.
I also have a pluto in my ninth house in Libra and I was told by an astrolger to becareful with my mother in law? it was the first thing the astrologer said to me when I sat down, it kinda confirmed what I felt yet I wonder am I being a bit hard?
Thanks Jenn
32 · Molly · 11 February 2010
Hi Jenn – the MIL advice sounds pretty sound, but always allow room for the positive manifestation. Let your MIL show you who she is, don’t assume she is an awful person. She is just someone who brings up your Pluto stuff. It is up to you to deal with your stuff. Resist the urge to put it all on her.
The Sun is not in detriment in Pisces.
