This is the glyph for Virgo: a lowercase “m” with her legs crossed.
For those of us in the northern hemisphere, the blazing heat of the Sun’s passage through fiery Leo— ironically known as the “dog days”— is almost behind us. Now our focus turns to getting back to work, back to school, back in the saddle, back in the groove: harvest time. Thus begins the Sun’s passage through Virgo each year.
Virgo is the mutable earth sign. Mutable signs are the most flexible and adaptable. Earth signs are the most utilitarian and practical. Therefore, Virgo has a talent for seeing what needs to be done, and doing it. They are very detail-oriented, and good at jobs that require multitasking.
Virgo as a sign is woefully underrated. Here’s the first thing you should know: they’re not all neat freaks. If you only go as far as to see the librarian of the Zodiac, you’ll miss the finer points of Virgo— the wit, subtlety, intelligence, intuition, earthly curiosity, and yes! deep sensitivity and sensuality.
Virgo rules work and service— everyday things and life’s routines. These things are important! Virgo is a sign that stays grounded in routine. The little details are not beyond a Virgo’s recognition, and that is why they often worry too much. What if this goes wrong? What if that’s not right? They are able to anticipate problems before they happen. For this reason, they are incredibly efficient workers, with an instant recognition of process and what they can do to help. Virgo’s work is very important, and they suffer if they feel they have not done a good job.
They do need to learn to let some of that go in close emotional relationships. Very few romantics fantasize about a lover who will nitpick them all day. It’s better if Virgo puts that analytical mind to work finding all the things that are right about the other person.
Virgo’s traditional planetary ruler is Mercury , the messenger. There are those who believe the true ruler of Virgo has yet to be discovered. There are others who attribute rulership of this inscrutable sign to Chiron, an asteroid named after a Centaur who studied shamanism, healing arts, botany, art, music, and served as mentor to many mythological heroes, including Hercules.
Virgo is generally health-conscious. Not always healthy living, but certainly aware of the body. Like Chiron, they possess an instinctive ability to connect with Mother Nature and enjoy practical applications for her offerings, such as medicinal plants.
Virgo rules everyday things and life’s routines, and is known for being meticulous about details. When Virgo is strong in a chart, chances are someone criticized the person when they were growing up, so young Virgo learned to be critical. For example, they can be very health-conscious or very hard workers, curmudgeons, or perfectionists.

I agree with most of the stuff, however, Virgos are aslo very vulnerable ppl, once surroundings are aware of thier vulnerability can hurt them easily but the will power n determined character easily takes over the pain n they VirgoRules again. Dun agree with..they all not all neat freaks..ACTUALLY THEY ARE!!
3 · Eme · 10 March 2006
I disagree about Virgos being neat freaks. I’ve lived with three Virgos and they were all messy in some way. Two of them were very messy and one, (my ex-husband) was a walking chaos-maker. They all had a high tolerance for dirt, too. I do have to say that they all looked very neat in appearance, though.
4 · Lisa · 16 March 2006
LOL! That just makes me shake my head every time I hear someone say Virgos are neat freaks. You have GOT to be kidding me! I’m a Virgo (4 planets in Virgo – Sun, Mercury, Uranus and Pluto) and I am FAR from being a neat freak. Although I don’t like living in filth and squalor, my house is not sparkling like Mr. Clean just came through, and I don’t have bleach running through my veins ;) I have known a LOT of Virgos, and out of all of them, only one could be considered a neat freak. The rest were just like me…. tidy, but NOT obsessed with neatness.
5 · Nick · 17 March 2006
I am also a Virgo, and I think everything has a place, but I am not a neat freak. The dust in my home is so thick that it has no place to land. Also, I want to know if you can be more than one element and how to find out what you are. My personality doesn’t fit in with the whole Earth thing… Well, it does but not very well…. Shoot my personality doesn’t fit in with the Virgo type anyways.. I have heard that there are tests and charts to help with this but I haven’t found them yet… Can anyone lead me in the right direction. AND WE ARE NOT ALL LIKE MONK!!
6 · Molly · 17 March 2006
Hi Nick— We are all mixtures of elements and types.. if astrology didn’t allow for that, it wouldn’t work as well as it does. It is very unlikely that other elements are not well represented in your chart. This is true for most people.
To find out, just go get your chart.
7 · Molly · 17 March 2006
P.S. Monk is awesome! Not all Virgos are like the fictitious Monk, but Monk doubtless had some Virgo stuff going on. I love how his attention to detail was his greatest talent as well as his greatest liability. That’s the way it is a lot of times.

The Virgo sign is misinterpreted in regards to neatness. They are definitely in general not ‘neat freaks’. However they are tidy in a sense. Mostly this feature only applies to the inside. We keep our heads organized. There has to be a reasonable explanation for everything.
So in general a Virgo will be tidy in the mind – not so much in the house ;o)
12 · Bryan · 9 July 2006
If you’re a Virgo and are not clean or neat it’s because you don’t like getting the dirt on your hands that comes from cleaning. The cleanliness aspect of being a Virgo has more to do with the Virgo not wanting to have the dirt and mess on themselves, not necessarily their homes.

I’m a virgo, and I sort of wish I was a neat freak..but sadly I’m only an order freak. A place can be a mess as long as the stuff I need is where its supposed to be or in a pile I remember making. I think the whole neat freak thing is a little too attached for most virgos.

That's funny.. One of my closest friends is a Virgo. She's not boring. (Hi, C!) My aunt is too, and she's great. (Hi Auntie Pat if youre reading!) I think Virgos are some of the funniest, most delightful people. Yes, they can get caught up in the details sometimes. And yes, some of them are boring. But it's just something they do, not who they are.
And you can't generalize by Sun sign like this. Nobody is only one sign. Everyone's chart paints a complex, multifaceted picture of who they are. I think I have been bored by every sign in the Zodiac! Even Aries, Leo, and Sag. It's not the sign you're born with, it's what you do afterward that makes you boring or not.
31 · Molly · 8 March 2007
p.s. Blue,
Lots of folks have the same reaction when they begin to study their charts. They think they have boring charts. I used to think mine was boring, and that I was an #@!hole with no hope.. I may still be an #@$hole, but I know I have some hope now. And I have a lot of the things you think are preferable. Aries Sun, Leo Moon, a very fiery chart.
32 · Hannah Slattery-Quintanilla · 9 March 2007
Oh my goodness.
I don’t think I’ve ever been TOTALLY bored by anyone. People are so unpredictable and sometimes scary. Hehee.
I agree with what Molly says. It’s how you use the energies. Even the so-called “driest” expression can be fascinating. Like math teachers and chemists are fascinating to me…I can’t even imagine doing all that. I am both envious and sort of confused by how they could stand it—but not really bored.
Sometimes boredom is more resulting from a lack of proper connection to someone (i.e. you aren’t listening to them really so you bore them with a bunch of unnecessary or untimely crap). haha…
Well, my highly unboring double Sag baby is crying (sometimes boring is good, people! it’s quiet!) ehhe.
Happy Friday…Hugs to you Molly.

I’m a Virgo man to a fault! And I accept it completely. As far as the neat freak. I do have that one messy closet, that no one knows about…laugh.
But my questions are what signs are best for me. I am married to a Libra ( 22 years) and we’re having major, major problems!! We have become opposite about everything. The first 15 years was awesome. And the sex was amazing. ( Talk about kinky… )Now not only do we not have sex AT ALL, we argue even when just talking. I think we have out grown each other’s sign. As a Virgo, I have tried everything I can think of. Cruise, weekend getaways, two on two house projects..etc..etc..She just seems un-interested and complacent about everything. Even the surprise cruise : ( I’m just at a place in Life where I want to have some fun after being so restricted. Kids are gone. I want to live!
Secondly. I have found a new friend for about a year. I have few. ( don’t understand that…but then again I do ). This friend is a Sagittarius. He is a lot of fun! Energetic, positive ( to a fault ) and we laugh a lot. We get along like brothers. (Except ) he seems to be very guarded and won’t fully commit to the friendship. Is a Sag a good friend for a Virgo and why don’t they show commitment?
34 · Molly · 24 March 2007
Hi Kevin
I'm not going to be able to give you a good answer here. You have only given me Sun signs to work with, and compatibility depends on your entire chart, not just this one small piece of it. The Sun sign is way too general. Maybe you aren't compatible, or maybe you aren't listening to her. What's missing here? Is she depressed? hormonal? Did she want to go on a cruise?
What does it mean to "commit" to a friendship? You sound a little uptight about that one. Just my opinion there.
35 · Kevin · 24 March 2007
Uptight? Nawww Not a Virgo…Never…laugh
Thanks for at least giving me something to think about. Perhaps I was vague. But I didn’t want to write a book. I can do that sometimes…laugh..
I do agree that I haven’t heard my wife, but mainly because she changes her mind so many times, it drives me up a wall. As soon as she tells me it’s one thing and I try to fix it, then it’s something else. AWWWW. I’ve been told that’s how Libra’s can be, but for goodness sake, can we make some progress…?.
She did want to go on the cruise or so she said. I did everything but have her sign a contract. I asked her many times and up until the time that I could cancel I gave her every out. And took her to get every medicine possible…..just in case. I don’t know what is wrong. Yes she might be depressed, but couldn’t it be possible that even sun signs that came together do eventually get tired of each other. I know I am. But 22 years is a lot of time and I do love her very much. What can you tell me that a Libra would like but would not tell me. She keeps things to herself a lot.
As far as my friend and the word “commit”, what I mean by that is he seems to not want to give any impression that we’re going to be friends for a long period of time. Like if I say something about something long term…next year the wives and us can all hit Vegas….NOT...It’s a feeling I guess that he’ll not stay around for awhile. For me, that is important. I guess you know more about that than I do. But I haven’t meant anyone like this person before and before I invest more time, I just want to be sure it has potential even based on sun signs. Yes I know the other answer, “get over myself and live and let live”....laugh. I only wanted another perspective. Every since I’ve been a child I have chosen friends very carefully. I have had the same two friends for 15 & 19 years. And my wife 22 years. But this new person almost seems like my brother. And he eluded to the same thing. But then he pulls back. I just don’t want to get let down, that’s all.
Again I was just wondering even based on the sun signs, if I am in a good place with my Libra wife and my new friend the Sagittarius??????
Oh, by the way, my wife does seem hormonal. I’ve even given her documents and articles on parimenopause. ( Like I said….I keep trying EVERYTHING...) She is currently talking to her Dr. But can that be all related? Thanks for listening. If there is anything else you can add, please do so. Also good website.
36 · Molly · 24 March 2007
Kevin,
Maybe you and your wife are fundamentally incompatible, I don’t know. But I would need to analyze both of your charts to interpret the dynamic for you. Your Sun signs just don’t tell me much about your relationship.
This Sag doesn’t seem to have the same style of friendship as you. Not all people want to be “married” to their friends. I know I sure as hell don’t. I think you probably do need to “get over yourself” on that one.
People are so much nicer to be around when they get over themselves. (Myself included.)
37 · Kevin · 25 March 2007
“ Married”...laugh…Point well taken Molly!! : ) I think I am just going to accept the good as it is and leave well enough alone…win, loose or draw….
As far as my wife and I are concerned, time will only tell, charts or sun signs aside. Libra’s are so indecisive and it changes from one day to the next. Perhaps her drama is just to keep me focused on her. ( I think I just got my own answer!!! )
Take care and thanks for listening. You’ve been a big help, even without the charts.

This all makes sense, but I am a really messy person… If I didn’t have a maid I’d just leave this mess behind me and move to a different flat, let the landlord skim a cleaning fee off my deposit… literally, that’s how messy I am.

I don’t know if it’s that simple. It’s not just about sun sign astrology. It’s more complicated than that, but I guess that’s one factor.

I just wanted to say that I am a Virgo, but I’m not at all reserved, and I love crowds, and glamour, and I do like “surprises”, only if the surprise is a positive one..LOL! I do like consistancy when it come to “certain” things, but when it comes to relationships I want to be “wooed” by my man, and surprised, and talked to as well. It’s strange that with in the past year I divorced an Aquarius who was 13 yrs older than me, attraced to one who is 9yrs older than me, and one who is close to my age or maybe 1 or 3 yrs older, I know I have been or am attracted to these Aquarian men..but you know what I really do think their age, and mentality has alot to do with it! I just realized that these men are ALL AQUARIUS’s..is that unreal or what?…Maybe thru my divorcing the first one I’m learing from any of my mistakes, and hopefully find AND HAVE something special with the one of the other two! I could go on..maybe I will return to the site and let yall know how things are going as I date my Aquarius man!, Only give me advice/critisism astrologically and/or NON astrologically only to help me try to make this Virgo/Aquarius, woman to man relationship work! I was wondering if Virgo and Aries had any chance of getting along, because im clashing with my mom(who is an Aries). TENSION IS RISING! Please,my patience is fading and I think I might display some of that ‘destructive critism’ my sign tends to have. Oh,and I have gotten into around four glaring-matches with her. Needless to say, they usually ended with a draw.
P.S. I was also wndering if you knew of any websites that coud help me delve deeper into my Sun sign?
45 · Molly · 31 January 2008
Jami, yes, Virgo and Aries can get along. Virgo has to work on being less critical and stop hoping Aries will be something she is not. Aries folks fly by the seat of their pants. Their style is rapid fire and sometimes too coarse for Virgo. Develop your compassionate side, and listen to what your mom says, not how she says it.
It sounds like there’s a dynamic here that goes way beyond your Sun signs. If you want to know more, I think you would get a lot out of exploring your Moon signs & other things in your charts at astro.com.
You might also read The Dance of Anger by Harriet Goldhor Lerner. It’s a great book on understanding and getting out of unhealthy relationship patterns.
Best to you & your mom.

Hey guyz ,
Just like many outhere, im a virgo too, who like
MANY VIRGORIANs , is definitely not a neat freak as described in the article. What I feel is that although this article comprehensively describes many of the aspects of being a typical virgo , it simply fails to elucidate the lighter side of being a virgo. The humour, tenderness and love which at times so compassionately flow from a virgo finds no place in this article. Thus , discussing the latter facts would only add to the richness and strength of the information of paragraphs spilled so handsomely.

Hey, I am a Virgo,Rising Libra, Moon Aries.
I am super cool, I love to write, and I am the most detailed-oriented person I know. My perfectionism eats me a live, sometimes I write a bunch of articles and stories without reviewing them because I have a tendency to re-edit them twenty times before I am satisfied. I am definitely a neat-freak in my own mind and I know where everything is. I think people mis-understand what being a Neat and organized person is, because we base it on the norm, not everything has to be super nice, but it can be of orderly. A few dirt marks on the carpet never hurt anyone. I am very introverted and I like to stay in my mind more than anything especially with music. I have very very high-standards and a thirst for knowledge. Great taste in clothing, women, cars, food, and I work-out on a regular basis. The T.V bores me because its not intellectually stimulating enough. My goal is to obtain 3 or 4 degrees before I die lol. Saturn is kicking my a** by the way. :)

…i just want a concrete answer coming from you. i’ve read a lot of articles about virgo and sagittarius that they are not compatible, which i guess is very true. i’m committed with a sag and most of the times we’re not in good terms. i myself don’t know where the problem lies, is it because i’m too critical and he finds it too offensive or is it because he is a free spirited soul, a freedom loving person that doesn’t want or can’t handle a more serious relationship? i do care for him but sometimes he tends to ignore problems which i really can’t take. i can’t stand his silence everytime confrontation heats up which i ignite most of the time. hey, what is that attitude, please tell me,is he insinuating something that he really cares for me or it’s the other way around? is there a possibility that the two zodiac would have an “and they lived happily ever after” ending? please help…really, am bothered.
54 · Molly · 31 August 2008
Marge, it is possible for Virgo and Sag to have a happily ever after ending. Compatibility is far more complex than just the sun signs. You have to analyze both charts to see what’s going on.
However, it does not sound like the two of you are compatible, or headed for happily ever after. Sorry.
55 · Dennis · 31 August 2008
Hey. I am a Sagittarius, and I never really get along with Virgos. I have some Virgo friends, but they are distant ones. They never seam to be in tune with my basic life stile/philosophy. As we all know, you should not foccus too much on the sun sign, but I think you can tell a simple patern based on it. Some of my biggest enamies in life have been Virgos. I do know that they can be fun, upbeat, and some could even be out of the norm, I just do not make it with a Virgo. I do hear this fairly offten between Sag and Virgo interaction. I think that even though Virgos can be free and laid back, the basic drive is different from the spontanius, blunt, undisaplened Sagittarius. It is a relationship that both sides need to work on. Virgos could do well by letting down some of their gard, and not be so cridical, and Sagittarius could show some care in the way that they aproch things at times, and try to connect more with their Virgo person. It can be a fun interaction if some issues are worked out.

I am a virgo, not a neat freak. I am not organized physically but mentally. I was a quiet person before my tenth grade but now I talk normally and am not so uncomfortable in large gatherings. I have many friends but like a little lonliness for space. I hate traveling. One thing for sure, I am over critical and analytical. I am shy and unable to attract female attention. Despite of my handsomeness which makes me feel inferior and unworthy. I am very passionate and a palmist told me that my sex hormones are more than an average male. I feel anger when things don’t go my way. Always willing to have charge of my own life.
